2026-27 Grade 6 Teacher - Desert Shadows ES

Location: Desert Shadows Elementary School – Full-time (1.0 FTE) non-interim position. Start date: immediate.

About the role

The Grade 6 Teacher supports the instructional process by supervising students, developing and delivering lesson plans aligned with established curriculum, collaborating with staff and administrators, and communicating with parents about student progress and classroom goals.

Responsibilities

• Administer developmental and subject-specific assessments to evaluate student competency and develop individualized learning plans.
• Advise parents and guardians on student progress, expectations, achievements, and methods for improvement.
• Assess student progress and provide feedback to students, parents, and administration.
• Collaborate with instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and meet classroom objectives.
• Counsel students to improve performance, health, problem-solving skills, and address personal issues.
• Demonstrate engaging pedagogical approaches tailored to individual student needs.
• Differentiate classroom instruction to address varied learning styles within established lesson plans.
• Direct assistant teachers, student teachers, volunteers, and student workers to support classroom programs.
• Facilitate student learning to achieve success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills.
• Instruct students in academic subjects through a defined course of study.
• Manage student behavior to ensure a safe and optimal learning environment.
• Monitor students in classrooms, playgrounds, field trips, and other educational settings for safety.
• Organize age-appropriate indoor and outdoor activities to encourage student participation.
• Participate in Professional Learning Community (PLC) teams to review data and instructional practices.
• Attend staff, district, IEP, and 504 meetings to gather and share required information.
• Prepare written materials such as grades, attendance records, and anecdotal notes to document progress and meet requirements.
• Report health and safety issues to administrators and appropriate agencies (e.g., fights, suspected abuse, substance abuse, or inappropriate behaviors).
• Respond to emergencies and direct concerns to appropriate personnel for resolution.
• Address inquiries from teachers, parents, and administrators regarding instructional programs and student progress.
• Perform other related duties as assigned to support the efficient functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a job-related area.
• Arizona Teaching Certificate with appropriate core content area certification.
• Structured English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement.
• Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
• Criminal background clearance.

Skills

• Proficiency in administering assessment instruments and using pertinent software applications.
• Ability to teach Arizona State-recognized standards and maintain accurate records.
• Knowledge of algebra, geometry, and technical information; ability to compose documents and facilitate discussions.
• Familiarity with lesson plan requirements, child development stages, and behavioral management strategies.
• Ability to schedule activities, meetings, and events; gather and classify data; and operate job-related equipment.
• Flexibility to work with diverse individuals and adapt to changing priorities.
• Problem-solving skills to analyze issues and create action plans.
• Ability to establish constructive relationships, maintain confidentiality, and exhibit tact and patience.
• Willingness to work flexible hours.

Work Environment

• Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; and fine finger dexterity.
• Typical work posture: 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing.
• Exposure to temperature extremes and some risk of injury or illness.
