About the role
Specialized services for students who Deaf or hard of hearing are provided in the educational setting as determined by the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Program responsibilities can include facilitation in the use of, and the production of American Sign Language (ASL), accommodations to the learning environment; implementation of specific instructional strategies, adaptations and modifications to the curriculum; and the use of assistive technology, augmentative communication devices and other supplemental aids.
¿Deaf¿ shall be used inclusively to refer to all students with hearing loss in need of ASL interpreting services, including D/deaf, hard of hearing, deaf/blind, deaf/disabled, and DeafPlus students.
Responsibilities
- Interpret for Deaf students in a variety of situations, facilitating communication and access among instructors, Deaf students, hearing students, and other staff.
- Interpret for Deaf students and Deaf staff in any school program activities including, but not limited to, school meetings, club meetings, job interviews, on-the-job training, travel instruction, field trips, work-based learning sites, support groups, phone calls, special classes, workshops and conferences.
- Collaborate with teachers to understand lesson plans, vocabulary, and context for accurate interpretation.
- Prepare for interpreting assignments by analyzing and rehearsing vocabulary and content related to varied courses.
- Monitor and adapt interpreting style and approach to support both language development and student independence.
- Assist in delivering individualized support aligned with Deaf students' IEPs, including tutoring or note taking for Deaf students, under the direction of licensed deaf/hard of hearing staff.
- Collaborate and communicate with team members to support students' access, language, and learning needs.
- Participate in IEP meetings as a team member, staff meetings and team planning sessions when requested or required.
- Participate in professional development required to attain and/or maintain current ASL interpreter certification as defined under Minnesota Statutes 122A.31, Subdivision 1, relating to American Sign Language/English Interpreters and associated Minnesota Department of Education memos related to ASL interpreter certification and credentials, including mentoring for provisional interpreters.
- Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality in accordance with FERPA, IDEA, and professional interpreter ethics.
- Performing other related duties as assigned, excluding personal cares.
- Participate in weekly mentoring for non-certified interpreters.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- An Associate's (or higher) degree, or two years of post-secondary coursework (60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) from an accredited institution of higher education which are applicable toward a bachelor's degree,
- Completion of a formal Interpreter Training Program (ITP) affiliated with an accredited institution,
- Hold a current interpreter/transliterator certification per Minnesota Statutes 122A.31.
- New graduates of an interpreter/transliterator program affiliated with an accredited educational institution will be considered if granted a two-year provisional certificate by the State of Minnesota Education Commissioner.
Skills
- Strong receptive and expressive American Sign Language skills.
- Understanding of Deaf culture, identity, and diverse communication skills.
- Knowledge of educational interpreting and the social-emotional needs of Deaf and hard of hearing students.
- Ability to modify interpreting techniques based on the student's language level, cognitive ability, and instructional context.
- Basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics.
- Ability to develop good relationships with students and staff.
- Ability to relate to students with warmth, friendliness and understanding, including sensitivity to the needs of others.
- Effective team member, possessing strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to adapt, and complete tasks on time and with minimal supervision.
- Ability to demonstrate proficiency in multiple communication techniques with Deaf and hard of hearing students.
- Ability to articulate basic information regarding communication methods, types of hearing losses, and the sociology of the Deaf community.
- Ability to articulate the differences inherent to interpreting in an educational setting as compared with other types of interpreter tasks and settings.
- Ability to adapt interpreting style, language, and mode to best fit the needs of students.
- Ability to maintain professional and ethical boundaries aligned with the interpreter Code of Professional Conduct.
- Ability to explain and defend the use of the Code of Professional Conduct of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and/or the National Association of the Deaf Code of Ethics.

Pay
- This is a 10 month position working 37.50 hours per week.
- The pay range for this position is: $23.24 - $33.32 EA1
- The maximum hiring step EA1 = step fourteen (14)
- The pay range for EA2 is: $26.34 - $40.61
- The maximum hiring step EA2 = step fifteen (15)
