10-month position, 8 hours/day. Non-interim role available immediately through 6/4/2027.
About the Role
The Custodian III provides custodial services at an assigned elementary school to ensure an attractive, sanitary, and safe environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role involves performing specialized cleaning operations, overseeing facility preparation for classroom activities and campus events, scheduling contracted custodians, and ensuring assignments are completed properly. Reports to the Building Administrator and Supervisor of Custodial and Grounds.
Responsibilities
- Attend unit meetings, in-service training, and workshops to gather information required for job functions.
- Clean assigned facilities and grounds (e.g., classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, multipurpose rooms) to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment.
- Consult with administrative personnel to plan, prioritize, and schedule custodial activities and achieve site maintenance objectives.
- Coordinate facility preparation with contracted custodial services for extracurricular and community activities (e.g., setting up rooms, opening doors, preparing the multipurpose room).
- Deliver supplies, mail, packages, and furniture to distribute materials within the site.
- Inspect facilities to ensure suitability for safe operations, identify necessary repairs, and maintain an attractive and clean condition.
- Maintain documents, files, and records (e.g., custodial schedules, inventory records, calendar of events) for up-to-date reference.
- Maintain supplies and equipment (e.g., cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops) to ensure availability for proper facility maintenance.
- Monitor students and staff in and around work areas (e.g., halls, multipurpose rooms, lunchroom, restrooms, grounds) to prevent injuries and ensure site safety.
- Order equipment, supplies, and materials to maintain availability and complete jobs efficiently while adhering to a budget.
- Perform minor maintenance repairs and tasks (e.g., changing lights, adjusting timers, moving furniture, replacing ballasts, unclogging toilets).
- Prepare the site for daily operations (e.g., opening gates, raising flags, sweeping walkways) to ensure facilities are operational and hazard-free.
- Prepare written materials (e.g., supply requisitions, safety inspections, work orders, inventory records) to document activities and inform administration.
- Respond to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and visitors to provide information, take appropriate action, or direct to appropriate personnel.
- Respond to immediate safety and operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, vandalism, alarms) and take appropriate action or notify personnel for resolution.
- Schedule facility maintenance activities and direct assigned contracted services personnel for efficient and timely service delivery.
- Support other site maintenance staff (e.g., grounds, trades) to complete custodial activities.
- Support campus work projects (e.g., Community Education, PTA, PTO, contractors) to complete activities and deliver services in a timely manner.
- Train assigned personnel (e.g., handling of equipment, use of chemicals) to develop professional trade and safety awareness skills.
- Transport tools, equipment, and supplies to ensure availability at job sites.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient functioning of the work unit.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Job-related experience is desired.
Skills
- Perform multiple tasks with potential need to upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions.
- Monitor electrical and mechanical systems, including fire and security alarms.
- Operate equipment and materials used in industrial maintenance.
- Assemble and/or repair office and classroom equipment.
- Operate a computer and pertinent software applications.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records.
- Perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and ratios.
- Understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly.
- Understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
- Knowledge of guidelines for storage and use of chemicals, industrial cleaning methods (floor and carpet care), and basic tools for minor repairs (plumbing, electrical, painting).
- Schedule activities, meetings, or events; gather and collate data; and consider factors when using equipment.
- Adapt to changing work priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain rapport with students, staff, and the community.
Work Environment
- Perform tasks requiring significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity.
- Job requires 10% sitting, 80% walking, and 10% standing.
- Work is performed under temperature extremes and conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Certificates and Licenses
- Online Driver Training Certification.
- Valid Driver’s License and evidence of insurability.
- Valid Arizona DPS Level I IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card (www.azdps.gov/services/public/fingerprint).
- Criminal Background Clearance.
Pay
Step 13, $15.44/hour. FLSA Status: Non-Exempt.
