2026-27 Custodial Supervisor - Como Service Center
About the role
The starting wage for the position is $75,376 and we are aiming to fill this role in 2 - 4 weeks. Employees could be eligible for Medical/Dental/Vision/Pension and accrue sick and vacation time.
Responsibilities
- Supervise district custodial staff, including Head Engineers; make hiring and retention decisions; train and coach employees; evaluate performance; recognize superior work and provide recognition; discipline employees and make recommendations for discharge when necessary; review and approve performance appraisals conducted by subordinate supervisors.
- Manage custodial staffing for all district buildings; define work assignments and schedule staff; manage relief staff assignments or delegate the task to subordinate supervisors.
- Maintain a personnel structure and staffing levels to accomplish district custodial functions in an effective and efficient manner.
- Respond to emergency situations (e.g., mechanical equipment failures, building break-ins and fire or property damage) on an on-call basis.
- Act as a liaison to the temporary staffing agency that fills custodial vacancies as necessary to ensure that assignments are filled on a timely basis.
- Review employee work restrictions and act as a liaison to Human Resources to determine workability.
- Approve permits for building usage.
- Participate in district meetings that plan and evaluate the services needed to determine the opening and closing of buildings and/or programs.
- Establish and communicate goals and objectives for the custodial team; plan agenda and chair meetings; facilitate discussions of issues at the schools and district buildings; synthesize information gathered to report to Operations leadership in order to seek solutions.
- Serve as a member of the Operations & Maintenance Committee as a representative of custodial services.
- Contribute to the creation of a data tracking tool for the custodial services program that is designed for use in a multi-facility district and which establishes staffing requirements, cleaning priorities, work schedules and related information.
- Respond to inquiries from state and federal agencies or other outside entities as necessary to ensure compliance with regulations or to provide requested information.
- Afford assistance with outside audits of custodial department functions.
- Review reports and ensure compliance with pool and playground certification, boiler and fire code compliance.
- Work with the Facilities Assistant Director to evaluate and make recommendations for annual budget requirements; monitor budget; develop related reports.
- Perform responsibilities relating to the District's purchasing process for custodial supplies and materials.
- Contribute to the District's Strong Schools, Strong Communities efforts by partnering with other staff to contribute to student achievement and the alignment and sustainability of resources.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- An associate degree or undergraduate certificate, in facilities or business management or a related field, five years working in the facilities maintenance field and two years of experience as a supervisor.
- (Equivalent combinations of education and/or experience will be considered.)
- Must possess a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license or equivalent out-of-state license with no revocations or suspensions during the three-year period prior to appointment to appointment (suspensions for parking related offenses excluded).
- Must possess a Chief Grade C Boiler license.
- Pool certification will be required within six months of appointment.
- Playground certification will be required within two years of appointment.
Skills
- Thorough knowledge of the Minimum Level Housekeeping Program.
- Considerable knowledge of automated and mechanical systems for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), boilers, chillers, cooling towers, swimming pools and related systems.
- Considerable knowledge of chemical usage.
- Considerable knowledge of boiler operations.
- Considerable knowledge of supervisory theories and practices in a unionized environment.
- Working knowledge of the federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations relating to building maintenance.
- Working knowledge of budget administration.
- Considerable ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Considerable ability to plan, assign, coordinate and delegate work and to train, supervise and evaluate staff.
- Considerable ability to interact effectively with a wide range of diverse contacts.
- Considerable ability to develop, prioritize and implement long-range work plans.
- Considerable ability to develop and present training.
- Considerable ability to utilize computer software in performing job responsibilities.
- Considerable ability to operate boilers and related equipment.

Schedule
This is a 12-month position working 40 hours per week.
