About the role

The Counselor - High School position at North Canyon High School provides support to the instructional process with specific responsibilities including implementing the ASCA National Standards for Students, managing schedules and placement of assigned students, and providing guidance and counseling.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes transcripts to ensure compliance with graduation requirements.
  • Aids students in creating their Educational/Career Action Plans to support their pursuit of post-high school goals.
  • Collaborates with internal and external personnel to implement and maintain services and programs.
  • Coordinates with teachers, college/university personnel, resource specialists, and community members to provide/receive requested information and make recommendations.
  • Counsels students, parents, and guardians on various topics such as crisis counseling, social emotional counseling, academic counseling, NCAA advisement, mid-year graduation, etc.
  • Develops and coordinates special programs and activities like College Night, Peer Tutoring Program, PVCC Day, Senior Awards Night, Freshman Orientation, Financial Aid Night, etc., to assist students in transitioning to higher education.
  • Maintains students' progress by monitoring classroom academics, PVONLINE courses, dual enrollments, etc., and identifying issues to increase student success.
  • Participates in meetings such as IEP, RED, MET, 504, etc., to convey and gather information for the instructional process.
  • Prepares a variety of materials like correspondences, financial and scholarship information, new student packets, surveys, newsletters, etc., to document activities and provide written reference.
  • Presents information on topics such as career readiness, career exploration, scholarships, AVID, PVONLINE, etc., to communicate information and gain feedback.
  • Proctors standardized assessments and exams like AIMS, PSAT, PLAN, ASVAB, AP exams, etc., to ensure the security and integrity of the exam process.
  • Reports health and safety issues to assigned administrator and appropriate agencies to maintain students' personal safety, a positive learning environment, and comply with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
  • Researches program eligibility requirements like financial aid, college eligibility, etc., to provide up-to-date, accurate counsel to students.
  • Responds to inquiries from internal and external parties to facilitate communication and provide direction.
  • Schedules student classes to secure appropriate placement and meet graduation and college eligibility requirements.
  • Supervises assigned programs like Peer Mediation, Teen AA, Peer Tutoring, etc., to monitor performance and achieve curriculum objectives.

Requirements

  • Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in job-related area.
  • Skills: Applying assessment instruments, preparing and maintaining accurate records, planning and managing projects, using pertinent software applications.
  • Knowledge: Stages of child development, age-appropriate activities/behaviors, assessment instruments and techniques.
  • Abilities: Scheduling activities, gathering, collating, and classifying data, using basic job-related equipment, working with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups, utilizing specific equipment, communicating with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, meeting deadlines and schedules, setting priorities, working as part of a team, working with frequent interruptions.
  • Experience: Job-related experience desired.
