2026-27 AY Lecturer Pool - Philosophy

Sacramento State’s Department of Philosophy, part of the College of Arts and Letters, offers one of the largest undergraduate philosophy programs in the California State University system. In addition to the general major, it provides concentrations in Ethics, Politics, and Law and in Science, Reason and Values. The department serves the campus and STEM disciplines through general education courses across every GE category.

About the role

Part-time lecturers are instructional faculty with conditional appointments based on enrollment and budget. Appointments are typically made for one semester, though occasionally academic-year initial appointments occur, and may be renewed based on department needs, funding, and performance. Hires from the applicant pool are made when instructional needs arise due to changing enrollment patterns, tenure-track faculty assignments, or other factors. Course assignments—including dates, time, and modality—are determined by the Department Chair under the direction of the College Dean.

Responsibilities

• Instruction, class preparation, and grading
• Holding office hours
• Additional duties as assigned by the department

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Philosophy
• At least one year of previous college-level teaching experience
• Ability to teach one or more of the following courses:
  • PHIL 2 - Ethics
  • PHIL 4 - Critical Thinking
  • PHIL 6 - Introduction to Philosophy
  • PHIL 26 - History of Philosophy

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in Philosophy
• Experience teaching online courses
• Ability to teach large classes

Pay

Initial rank and salary are based on professional experience and educational background. As of July 2024, the classification salary ranges (full-time rate for 15 weighted teaching units) are:

• Lecturer A: $5,507 – $6,677 per month
• Lecturer B: $6,221 – $13,224 per month
• Lecturer C: $6,825 – $14,523 per month
• Lecturer D: $8,593 – $15,211 per month

A semester’s compensation consists of six payments of the pro-rated base rate. For example, a Lecturer A assigned 3 units at the minimum salary would earn $1,101.40 per check, totaling $6,608.40 for the semester.
