Cal State LA’s Philosophy Department invites applications for its 2026-27 academic-year part-time lecturer pool. Positions are filled semester-by-semester based on enrollment, budget, and instructional need. Initial appointments are typically one semester; renewal depends on performance, funding, and departmental requirements. Many hires occur just before the semester begins, so availability on short notice may be required.

About the role

The Philosophy Department is methodologically diverse, with faculty working in both the “analytic” and “continental” traditions and committed to using philosophy to promote justice and social change.

Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned philosophy courses
  • Prepare course materials and conduct class sessions
  • Grade student work and hold regular office hours
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the department
  • Support a student-centered, multicultural, and inclusive learning environment
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students in Cal State LA’s shared commitment to engagement, service, and the public good

Requirements

  • MA or Ph.D. in Philosophy or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated ability to relate well to others in an academic setting
  • Experience and/or interest in working in a multiethnic, multicultural environment
  • Commitment to student-centered learning and teaching
  • Proficiency in written and oral English

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Training or experience that fosters a collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment

Pay

Monthly salary is based on the CSU Lecturer salary schedule (effective 7/1/2024) and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank.

  • Lecturer A/2 (full-time equivalent): $5,507 – $6,677 per month
  • Lecturer B/3 (full-time equivalent): $6,221 – $13,224 per month
  • Lecturer C/4 (full-time equivalent): $6,835 – $14,523 per month
  • Lecturer D/5 (full-time equivalent): $8,593 – $15,211 per month

Part-time appointments receive a prorated portion of the full-time salary.
