2026-27 AY Lecturer Pool - Pan African Studies (PAS)

Cal State LA’s Pan African Studies Department in the College of Ethnic Studies invites applications for its 2026-27 academic-year part-time lecturer pool. Positions are filled each semester as instructional needs arise due to enrollment fluctuations, faculty reassignments, or other unforeseen factors. Initial appointments are typically one semester in length, though occasional academic-year appointments occur. Renewals depend on departmental need, funding, and performance. Because needs often emerge shortly before the semester begins, candidates may be asked to start on very short notice.

Minimum Qualifications

• Appropriate degree from an accredited university:
  • Bachelor’s degree plus substantial teaching experience for lower-division courses;
  • Master’s degree for upper-division undergraduate courses;
  • Doctoral degree, or master’s degree plus substantial teaching experience, for graduate courses.
• Demonstrated excellence in college-level teaching.
• Ability to relate well to others within the academic environment and interest in working in a multiethnic, multicultural setting.
• Demonstrated commitment to student-centered learning and teaching.
• Proficiency in written and oral English.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment.
• Relevant professional work experience and training.

• Instruction, class preparation, grading, and office hours.
• Additional duties as assigned by the department.

Pay

Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Monthly hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate full-time-equivalent (FTE) salary range listed below (as of 7/1/2024):

• Lecturer A/2: $5,507 – $6,677 FTE
• Lecturer B/3: $6,221 – $13,224 FTE
• Lecturer C/4: $6,825 – $14,523 FTE
• Lecturer D/5: $8,593 – $15,211 FTE

Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank.

About the Department

The Department of Pan-African Studies (PAS) offers a systematic investigation of the history, culture, social relationships, political economy, literature, arts, and languages of peoples of African descent and their contributions to world civilization. The curriculum combines in-depth and transnational approaches to the Black experience, placing African-American studies within the broader context of Africa and the African Diaspora. PAS majors earn a degree in African-American Studies, while minors gain an emphasis on the Black experience that complements other majors.
