2026-27 Assistant Coach - Boys Cross Country - Middle School

About the role

The position involves working with the assistant coach to support the growth and development of student athletes. Responsibilities include keeping up-to-date with sport-specific knowledge, understanding and enforcing rules and regulations, promoting the sport, organizing practices and contests, and modeling professionalism and sportsmanship.

Responsibilities

• Keep abreast of knowledge and techniques associated with sport
• Study and understand rules and regulations associated with sport
• Promote sport within the school and community
• Report scores and contest-related information immediately following each contest
• Attend practices and contests on a daily basis
• Implement a system of play and/or style of instruction as directed by the head coach
• Maintain a standard of care by exercising safety training and basic athletic training skills
• Exercise good judgment and project positive coaching behaviors
• Serve as an example of sportsmanship and humility
• Ensure compliance with eligibility requirements, participation rules, and the District Eligibility Code
• Report accidents and injuries to appropriate parties
• Communicate with local news media and the league website
• Plan and implement post-season gatherings
• Report safety concerns and violations to the head coach and athletic directors
• Attend evaluations meetings with the building athletic director
• Meet regularly with the head coach to discuss program goals
• Account for and manage program-related equipment and supplies
• Work with the head coach to discuss fundraising activities

Requirements

Must be at least 19 years of age to apply for any assistant coaching positions and 21 years of age to apply for any head coaching positions. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent, prior sport-specific playing and/or coaching experience, and completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course.

Qualifications

• Education and experience: High school diploma or equivalent, prior sport-specific playing and/or coaching experience, and completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course.
• Additional requirements: Two or more years of paid high school and/or post-secondary sport-specific coaching experience and/or related club coaching experience.

Skills

Knowledge of league and WIAA rules and regulations, National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) sport-specific rules and regulations, record keeping and report preparation, school board policies and procedures, organizing and performing job responsibilities efficiently and independently, paying strict attention to detail, speaking, reading, and following written or verbal communications, practicing effective safety and security within individual work routines, developing and maintaining positive customer relations with staff and service providers, working collaboratively with District staff, promoting teamwork with co-workers, practicing ethical and professional standards of conduct including the requirements of confidentiality, relating effectively with parents, staff, students, and the public in a multicultural and multiracial community, recognizing that each person is a unique individual even as we celebrate their group cultural heritage.
