Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalency
• Must hold or have the ability to obtain an Athletic Coaching License (7–12) from the New Mexico Public Education Department (details)
• Must complete the Fundamentals of Coaching online exam offered through the New Mexico Activities Association (www.nmact.org)
• Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport
• Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of basketball and a commitment to staying current with new theories and procedures
• Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program

Responsibilities

• Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success
• Demonstrate and instruct behaviors that foster socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment
• Upgrade coaching knowledge and skills through clinics, observations, and consultation
• Work with student athletes, providing practice support and advice throughout the season
• Teach and enforce rules and regulations of the sport
• Advise, coordinate, and support assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and principal

Work Environment

• On-site attendance is mandatory
• Evening and weekend work required

About the Role

The head coach reports to the athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals. The goal of the role is to develop student athletes both athletically and personally, ensuring a successful season while promoting positive character traits.
