About the role
To ensure the physical health and well-being of the school community.
Responsibilities
- Deliver and coordinate health and wellness services for families
- Conduct and coordinate health screening programs at periodic intervals or on referral, as specified by local and state guidelines
- Provide basic First Aid to students
- Refers identified health problems to the appropriate resource for correction and/or amelioration
- Send home DIET form to parents for pediatrician to fill out for food allergies
- Initiates follow-up of basic health problems as required
- Assesses and evaluates ill students during the school day and provides appropriate care and/or referrals as necessary
- Interprets health status and/or problems to the student, parents, and school personnel and makes recommendations when appropriate
- Plans, coordinates and implements a program of health instruction
- Provide health pockets for students by grade or homeroom
- Provide vision and hearing screenings on all referred students as well as K, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th graders and communicate to parents of those who failed screening
- Provide dental screenings for 2nd grade students and refer those in need of treatment
- Serves as a resource to school personnel regarding various aspects of health education
- Work with SAT team to create and implement student Health Plans and Section 504 Individualized Assistance Plans as needed
- Maintain constant communication with families regarding all health related instances
- Assists in the control of communicable diseases within the school
- Assess and assist in maintaining a healthy and safe school environment
- Maintain and monitor appropriate health and wellness supplies for campus
- Maintains up to date cumulative health records on all students and completed required administrative records
- Monitor, train and assist school personnel to comply with medication policies
- Collect and manage all necessary information pertaining to a student’s immunization history and hearing/vision screenings and ensure this information is entered into the state database
- Ensure appropriate staff are trained to administer emergency care(i.e. CPR, AED, etc.)
- Ensure appropriate staff are trained to respond to student emergencies
- Work with the Director of Special Populations to create and implement systems for program administration, including referral methods, data collection and storage
- Provide training and technical assistance as necessary, especially in areas mandated by local, state and federal guidelines
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, and community
- Cultivate positive two-way communication between school and families
- Create frequent opportunities for families to engage in the learning process
- Regularly work with colleagues to share and plan for student success
- Participate in professional development opportunities that emphasize improving practice
- Regularly participate in or initiate school activities which further the mission of the school
- Regularly participate in or initiate activities which emphasize community service
- Serves on the School Wellness Committee
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- Hold a practical nursing license from the State Board of Nursing or have previous experience as a LPN
- At least 2 year’s experience as a LPN
- Eligible for licensure by the State Board of Nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse
- Experience in and/or understanding of the public school system including charter schools is desirable
Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree in Practical Nursing
- Experience working as a nurse with children or adolescents
- Experience working within an elementary school environment
