[2026-2027] K-3 English Language Development (ELD) Instructor (Full-Time)

Yu Ming Charter School is a non-profit, tuition-free network of public charter schools in Oakland and San Leandro, open to all California residents. As a leader in Mandarin immersion education, our mission is to nurture an inclusive, diverse community to become empowered, engaged, and outstanding global citizens. We serve 1,060 students across three campuses, representing 70 Bay Area zip codes and 29 home languages. Founded in 2011, Yu Ming is the first Mandarin immersion public charter school in California and has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and a California Distinguished School.

About the role

English Language Development (ELD) Instructors work under the guidance of School Administrators and the Director of Academics, in close collaboration with English Literacy Teachers, to support the academic growth of English Language Learners (ELLs). ELD Instructors deliver targeted English language instruction to small groups of students acquiring English as a second or additional language, promoting student achievement through high-quality, differentiated instruction. They administer the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) and use assessment data to inform instruction and monitor progress.

Responsibilities

• Use Amplify CKLA Language Studio curriculum to teach designated ELD lessons to small groups of students in grades K-4.
• Administer the Initial and Summative English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) in compliance with state and district guidelines.
• Collaborate with classroom teachers, English Literacy staff, and school leadership to support language development across content areas.
• Develop and implement culturally responsive, linguistically appropriate lesson plans tailored to students’ individual proficiency levels.
• Maintain accurate records of student progress, ELD portfolios, and language proficiency assessments.
• Deliver targeted ELD instruction aligned with state standards and language proficiency goals.
• Use formative and summative assessment data to monitor progress, inform instruction, and adjust teaching strategies.
• Support the development of students’ academic vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English.
• Participate in professional development focused on English language acquisition, instructional strategies, and cultural competency.
• Engage in regular communication with families to support student progress and encourage language development at home.
• Create a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that fosters student confidence and language risk-taking.
• Support school-wide efforts to promote equity and access for multilingual learners.
• Perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications

• B.A. or B.S. degree (required).
• Native or near-native fluency in English (required).
• Experience working with children (required).
• Flexibility and adaptability to change; ability to work in a dynamic, creative, and start-up learning environment (required).
• Superb interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate with a diverse group of students, colleagues, and families (required).
• Ability to follow instructions and accept constructive feedback (required).
• Maturity, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and a solutions-oriented attitude (required).
• Experience or coursework in education (preferred).
• Understanding of the English Language Development Standards (preferred).
• Successful relevant experience in an urban school setting (preferred).

Schedule

180-day school year with 8 student-free professional development days. Workday hours are 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday–Friday. Expanded Learning Program employment is available during October, Spring, and Summer breaks.

Pay

$20–23 per hour, based on experience. This is a non-exempt position eligible for benefits and overtime.
