About the role

The U.S. Army War College (USAWC) seeks a dynamic and experienced Faculty Instructor to support the Distance Education Program (DEP).

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver graduate-level instruction in core curriculum areas such as national security strategy, strategic leadership, defense management, and theater strategy and campaigning.
  • Serve as a faculty advisor for student research projects and support individual and group learning through online forums, video conferences, and in-person residencies.
  • Facilitate online and in-residence seminars using adult education best practices.
  • Contribute to course design, curriculum development, and program assessment in collaboration with other faculty and academic staff.
  • Conduct scholarly research and/or publish on relevant topics in strategic studies or national security affairs.
  • Participate in academic governance, faculty development, and institutional outreach efforts.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a Senior Service College diploma and a Joint Professional Military Education Phase II qualification.
  • A minimum of a Master’s Degree from an accredited graduate degree granting institution in a discipline relevant to the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) curriculum as listed below:
    • Strategic Leadership
    • Applied Ethics
    • National Security Policy and Strategy
    • Theory of War
    • Military History
    • Elements of National Power (Diplomacy, Information, Military, and Economics)
    • Civil-Military Relations
    • Military Strategy, Operational Art, and Planning
    • Materiel Acquisition, Force Development, Human and Fiscal Resources
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a faculty instructor at either a Senior Service College or an accredited graduate degree granting institution.
  • Relevant Technology Expertise qualifications include, but are not limited to:
    • Online teaching experience using a Learning Management System (LMS) recognized in the academic community.
    • Microsoft 365 (i.e., Word, Outlook, Power Point, SharePoint Portal), Microsoft Teams, basic writing and editing skills, search/create folders, computer terminology, basic troubleshooting of login and connectivity issues.
    • Experienced (or able to be trained on site) in the use of visual and automation technology in the individual seminar rooms at Carlisle Barracks (at no additional cost to the government).
    • Familiarity with the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools recognized in the academic community.
  • For those quoting for the Battlefield Staff Guide, the minimum qualifications require general American Civil War history for context; specific knowledge of Gettysburg including detailed knowledge of the campaign, leaders, and the battlefield; and the ability to relate strategic leader competencies and course materials studied by USAWC students to events that occurred on the respective battlefield.

Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of Civil War history, especially the Gettysburg campaign and battlefield.
  • Ability to connect leadership competencies and strategic concepts taught at USAWC to historical events on-site.
  • A PhD or multiple degrees in relevant areas, as well as teaching awards, citations, or previous academic promotions.
