About the role

The Metal Finisher is primarily responsible for grinding, filing, or sanding surfaces of metal items or parts.

Responsibilities

  • Examines and feels surface of metal to detect defects such as dents, scratches, or breaks in metal.
  • Removes dents, using hammer and dolly block, and fills uneven surface with molten solder.
  • Smooths surface of item to specified finish, using handtools and powered tools.
  • May polish metal surface, using powered polishing wheel or belt.
  • Examines finished work pieces to verify conformance with specifications according to operator inspection sheet, quality control plans and/or customer notes using instruments such as gauges.
  • Maintains the work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition and follows prescribed safety regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate and plant safety standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated detail orientation, self motivation skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats.
  • Competent at basic dimensional measuring and able to quickly learn the use of precision measurement tools.
  • Demonstrated competency in basic shop math.
  • Previous experience with overhead crane use is desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively implement or respond to change.
  • Work in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Aptitude to take orders and execute the same efficiently.

Equipment Operated

  • Welder.
  • Lifts, robots, cranes.

Physical Demands

  • Lift/Carry: up to 50 lbs (Regularly)
  • Push/Pull: up to 50 lbs (Regularly)
  • Reach Overhead: (Occasionally)
  • Moderate to heavy physical effort required to perform the basis essentials of the job.
  • Frequently required to bend and stoop.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Climb (Occasionally)
  • Squat/Bend/Kneel (Occasionally)
  • Sit (Occasionally)
  • Stand (Regularly: 5-8 hrs/shift)
  • Walk/Move About (Frequently: 2-5 hrs/shift)

Work Environment

  • Regularly exposed to varying temperature conditions between 60-100 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Loud noise.
  • Moving machinery parts.
  • Airborne particles and fumes from production equipment.
