Summary

Assist in small group and individual pupil instruction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist students with instruction under the direction of the special education teacher
  • Assist teacher in maintaining discipline
  • Assist teacher with instructional activities
  • Escort students from room to room
  • Toileting students is required
  • Involves work with both special education and regular students
  • Assist teaching staff in the implementation of IEP
  • Supervise students while they are at recess and lunch
  • Assist students with classroom assignments
  • Copy materials for instructional purposes
  • Assist teacher in filing material and preparing all necessary paperwork
  • Alert teachers to problems that may be observed

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree
  • Two years of college credit OR hold an associate's (or higher) degree; OR successful completion of a paraprofessional assessment which assesses content knowledge in mathematics, reading and writing and an understanding of how to assist in the instruction of these topics (Parapro Assessment)
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos
  • Ability to write simple correspondence
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance
  • Basic knowledge and experience with job related computer hardware and software applications
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to sit, and talk or hear
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • Must be able to push items of fifty (50) pounds, such as pushing children on a bike or wheelchair or moving/rearranging furniture
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds; when doing heavier lifting, should do so with assistance
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision

Work Environment

  • Noise level is typical of classrooms having school children and is a standard acceptable level for this environment
  • Will work throughout the school building, on school grounds and occasionally off campus
  • Responsible for the safety and well being of students in his/her charge

Pay

Range $22.12-$25.18 BPS contracts

Schedule

6.5 hours per day (8:00am to 2:30pm)
