About the role

The special education resource teacher is responsible for planning an educational program for students identified with disabilities according to state/federal guidelines. They must possess a wide knowledge of intervention and classroom management techniques, and be capable of using various teaching methods and materials relevant to the student's disability. They must also collaborate effectively with classroom teachers, support staff, and building administrators to provide appropriate services.

Responsibilities

  • Create a welcoming, engaging, and positive classroom climate and culture
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, providing individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student
  • Evaluate students through formal and informal assessment procedures to assess their strengths and challenges
  • Write instructional objectives in the affective, psychomotor, and cognitive domains for students with disabilities
  • Provide assistance to help students develop behavior and social skills
  • Develop lesson plans to provide appropriate specially designed instruction related to IEP goals and objectives
  • Affirmatively implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and ensure their implementation, data collection, and plan reviews/revisions
  • Prepare progress reports and yearly evaluations, monitoring and communicating IEP goal progress in accordance with district timelines
  • Facilitate the collaborative process of developing student-centered IEPs
  • Adapt the curriculum, instruction, and lessons to provide individual, small-group, or specially designed instruction to meet the needs of the individual student
  • Provide opportunities for students to explore life and career goals
  • Maintain student records in accordance with school, district, state, and federal guidelines and statutes
  • Participate in and contribute to professional learning teams at the district and school levels
  • Encourage students to think independently and express original ideas
  • Establish and teach expectations for student behavior to provide a safe and respectful classroom environment
  • Identify student needs and work collaboratively with other professional staff members in assessing and assisting students
  • Communicate with students, parents, and school counselors on student progress
  • Administer and monitor IEP accommodations and progress monitoring on IEP goals and objectives
  • Supervise and oversee students throughout the assigned workday

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in special education
  • Valid K-12 Michigan Teaching Certificate with endorsements in learning disabilities, cognitive impairments, autism spectrum disorder, or emotional impairments preferred
  • A major in the subject area is strongly preferred
  • A passionate commitment to improving learning for all students
  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal relationships
  • Skills in individualizing instruction
  • Knowledge of positive behavioral supports and interventions
  • Experience implementing a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework preferred
  • Evidence of ability to establish positive working relationships with all stakeholders
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills

Conditions of Employment

  • The work year, salary, and fringe benefits will be consistent with the current agreement between the Board of Education and the Livonia Education Association
