About the Role

Support seamless operations through skilled preventive maintenance and timely repairs of buildings, facilities, and equipment within assigned areas of Duke University Hospital and Medical Center. This is an on-site position.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular inspections of designated facilities and equipment.
  • Participate in image rounds if applicable.
  • Set up and maintain ongoing communication with customers to ensure timely response to repair and maintenance needs.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs on electrical, mechanical, HVAC, and communication systems and equipment.
  • Make repairs to general building facilities, including carpentry, ceiling and floor coverings, doors, windows, and furniture.
  • Perform minor paint and patch work.
  • Complete and/or assist in minor service requests as needed.
  • Solicit advice from shop personnel in specific trades for complex issues; refer time-consuming items to shop personnel and assist in repairs if necessary.
  • Conduct regular inspections of fire and smoke partitions for penetrations; patch penetrations as needed and report unusual problems.
  • Advise management on the general condition of facilities and equipment; recommend improvements and upgrades for budget planning.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and maintenance records to ensure compliance with regulations and codes.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Three to four years of experience in a specific trade or in general building maintenance and repair, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s license with a driving history acceptable under Duke’s Safe Driving Policy.
  • Experience or training in a healthcare setting preferred.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read, comprehend, and write simple instructions and correspondence.
  • Effective communication skills for one-on-one or small group interactions with customers, clients, and employees.
  • Respect for patient privacy and confidentiality of patient information.
  • Ability to complete daily records, logs, and time sheets.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Occasionally required to climb ladders or stairs.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds or more.

Work Environment

  • May be exposed to high, precarious places, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
  • Required to attend all related safety training sessions and comply with safety guidelines.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Pay

Annual base salary range: USD $22.05 to USD $36.47 per hour. Offer amount considers factors such as scope and responsibilities, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, and market/organizational considerations.
