Location: Aurora, IL. Must be a U.S. citizen able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance. Schedule is casual (includes on-call and temporary) with rotating shifts. This position is on-site.

About the Role

The Remote Pilot Operator (RPO) supports air traffic controller training services for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) by playing the role of the pilot and other controllers in the Air Traffic Controller training simulator. The RPO operates a simulated radar display and voice communication system to simulate pilot actions and communications during medium and high-fidelity training exercises.

RPOs receive voice commands from students, input entries into the automated system to simulate pilot actions, translate displayed information into ATC terminology, and respond to students via the voice communication system using proper phraseology.

The candidate must complete certifications in both classroom (passing a test on airspace and procedures) and lab (performing as a Remote Pilot Operator on all positions).

Responsibilities

  • Simulate pilot and remote ATC facility actions and communications during training exercises.
  • Input commands into the automated system to reflect pilot actions based on student instructions.
  • Translate displayed information into appropriate ATC terminology.
  • Respond to students using proper phraseology via the voice communication system.
  • Complete required certifications in classroom and lab settings.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Ability to read and interpret diagrams and manuals.
  • Clear and effective verbal communication skills.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team (e.g., multimedia developers, quality assurance, instructional system designers, subject matter experts, instructors).
  • Experience and certification in ATC Tower, TRACON, or En Route simulation labs (strongly desired but not required).
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of FAAO JO 7110.65 (strongly desired but not required).
  • Effective team-building skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.).
  • Familiarity with current technologic tools (tablets, notebooks, applications, etc.).
  • Basic familiarity or experience with pilot/controller communications or phraseology.

Pay

Target salary range: $40,001 - $80,000, based on experience.
