Responsibilities
- Supervision of Children
- Consistent and safe supervision of children and youth in grades K–8
- Maintain required teacher-to-child ratios (1:10 for ages 5–9 and 1:15 for ages 10 and up)
- Conduct and document daily attendance headcount checks at the start, end, and intermittently throughout the day
- Ensure accurate, real-time knowledge of the number of children in care and their whereabouts during all program activities and transitions
- Participant Engagement
- Collaborate with the Program Director and/or Coordinator to create and coordinate activities for youth and advance program goals
- Facilitate daily group youth activities that promote learning, creativity, and well-being — including STEM/STEAM, literacy, fitness, and social-emotional development
- Prepare a structured weekly lesson plan
- Demonstrate positive role-modeling for children in grades K–8th grade by showing empathy, respect, and cooperation in daily interactions and reinforcing these behaviors through consistent, age-appropriate guidance
- Provide classroom management and instruction
- High school diploma or equivalent credentials
- 3 Months to one-year experience working with youth in a recreational, educational and/or social environment
- Clearance through New York State Central Registry and New York State Office of Children and Family Services required
- Experience with or knowledge of best practices in youth development preferred
- Experience with or knowledge of whole language philosophy preferred
- Ability to establish rapport with young people
- Engaging personality and detailed orientated skills are essential
- Strong oral and written communication, time management and organizational skills are necessary
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and other standard business technology is required
- Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
- Ability to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time, or climb five flights of stairs, if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork
- Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents
- Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation
- Ability to travel for a minimum of 1 mile within a reasonable amount of time and in all types of weather, including inclement weather, if required to conduct home visits and/or field work
