Responsibilities

  • Supervision of Children
    • Consistent and safe supervision of children and youth in grades K–8
    • Maintain required teacher-to-child ratios (1:10 for ages 5–9 and 1:15 for ages 10 and up)
    • Conduct and document daily attendance headcount checks at the start, end, and intermittently throughout the day
    • Ensure accurate, real-time knowledge of the number of children in care and their whereabouts during all program activities and transitions
  • Participant Engagement
    • Collaborate with the Program Director and/or Coordinator to create and coordinate activities for youth and advance program goals
    • Facilitate daily group youth activities that promote learning, creativity, and well-being — including STEM/STEAM, literacy, fitness, and social-emotional development
    • Prepare a structured weekly lesson plan
    • Demonstrate positive role-modeling for children in grades K–8th grade by showing empathy, respect, and cooperation in daily interactions and reinforcing these behaviors through consistent, age-appropriate guidance
    • Provide classroom management and instruction

    Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent credentials
    • 3 Months to one-year experience working with youth in a recreational, educational and/or social environment
    • Clearance through New York State Central Registry and New York State Office of Children and Family Services required
    • Experience with or knowledge of best practices in youth development preferred
    • Experience with or knowledge of whole language philosophy preferred
    • Ability to establish rapport with young people
    • Engaging personality and detailed orientated skills are essential
    • Strong oral and written communication, time management and organizational skills are necessary
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and other standard business technology is required

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods
    • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
    • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time, or climb five flights of stairs, if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork
    • Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents
    • Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation
    • Ability to travel for a minimum of 1 mile within a reasonable amount of time and in all types of weather, including inclement weather, if required to conduct home visits and/or field work
