About the role
New Horizons, a nonprofit serving special needs adults in the San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, Ventura and Glendale, California, for more than 60 years, seeks a self-starter to be a Youth Navigation-Career Pathway Navigator.
Responsibilities

- Paid Student Work-Experience
- Facilitate Pre-Employment Transition Services
- Facilitate all activities that align with student interests, strengths, and goals
- Communicate with family, students and supervisors on student schedule
- Coordinate and secure student job site placements
- Complete DOR reports: ISP Report, 1st report/30 hours, 2nd Report/30 hours, and 3rd Report/40 hours (100 hours)
- Track student weekly timesheet
- Worksite Development
- Maintain communication with all sources of support: Job Site Manager, job coaches, parents, supervisors, etc.
- Lead Pre-ETS in an inclusive summer programming that promotes leadership, social skills, and community engagement
- Plan and deliver engaging summer activities
- Supervise outings, workshops, and community-based activities
- Facilitate group discussions and reflection activities
- Mentor students in practicing social skills and building peer relationships
- Deliver engaging and accessible training modules: Privacy & Safety, Communication Skills, and Relationship Building
- Support learners in developing safe online habits
- Build Independent travel skills for safe and confident community access
- Assess each student's/class transportation needs, comfort level, and goals to create individualized training plans
- Teach students/classes how to safely use public transportation (bus, metro, paratransit)
- Provide real-world practice trips in the community
- Monitor progress and adapt training methods to ensure skill mastery and increased independence
Requirements
- Must speak English
- High School diploma
- Experience with special needs / developmental disabilities (preferred)
- Driver's License for 3+ years required
- At least 21 years of age
- Authorized to work in the United States
- Belief in the agency philosophy and in the dignity of the individual
- Demonstrated ability to work in a cooperative and supportive manner with staff, consumers, and the community
- Ability to organize work in an efficient and timely manner to meet the demands of the job
Qualifications
- Problem solving skills and the ability to follow through on a situation to its logical end
- Attention to detail and the ability to use good judgment and make sound decisions relating to the health and safety of the consumers served
- Excellent time management
- Computer proficiency in Outlook, Word, and ability to learn other applications as needed
- Ability to write in English reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
- Ability to effectively present information in English and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
- Access to a vehicle, proof of vehicular insurance, a valid California Driver's License, and a driving record acceptable to the agency's insurance carrier
- Bi-lingual in Spanish preferred
