Responsibilities

• Supervision & Safety: Ensure a safe and nurturing environment for youth participants; facilitate engaging activities that promote social, emotional, and physical development for a group of 20 members; provide mentorship and guidance to members; implement educational programs aligned with best practices in childhood development; supervise and manage groups of children in various settings; collaborate with parents, teachers, and community organizations; utilize skills in sports coaching, theater, or other extracurricular activities; maintain accurate records of members’ progress and participation; respond to emergencies with appropriate first aid measures when necessary
• Classroom Management and Teaching: Establish classroom rules and behavior; provide children with basic needs and ensure supervision; adapt teaching methods to children’s interests and learning styles; manage classroom activities, lessons, play, breaks, and meals; track children’s progress and communicate effectively with parents and teachers; maintain a clean and organized classroom
• Relationships & Mentoring: Serve as a positive role model and mentor to young participants, fostering their self-esteem and personal development; cultivate a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where every child feels valued and respected; collaborate with colleagues to ensure program goals are met and share best practices

Requirements

• Experience working with students in educational or recreational settings is preferred
• Background in after-school programs, sports coaching, theater, or special education is highly desirable
• Knowledge of childhood development principles and effective classroom management techniques
• Ability to educate and inspire youth through various activities while fostering a positive learning environment
• Certification in First Aid is preferred; willingness to obtain certification if not currently held
• Effective communication skills and the ability to build rapport with children and their families
• A commitment to promoting inclusivity and understanding diverse backgrounds among youth
• Department of Justice and FBI Background check clearance
• 18 years of age
• NCLB (No Child Left Behind) certification required / 48 Transferable Units
• Multi-conversational language skills are a plus (Spanish, Vietnamese)
• Experience or coursework in Childhood Development, or related fields, will be given preference

Work environment & physical demands

• Frequently required to stand, walk, and utilize hand and finger dexterity
• Frequently required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, or crawl
• Continually required to talk or hear
• Rarely work in high, precarious places (playground equipment height)
• Occasional exposure to outside weather conditions and to bloodborne and airborne pathogens or infectious materials
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud
• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds (with support, a child who has fallen)
• Specialized equipment: Walkie Talkie radios for communication
