About the role

Johnson County Mental Health Center is seeking a Mental Health Nurse (RN) to support the Youth Crisis Stabilization Center, a 24-hour facility serving adolescent clients. This role also involves assisting with admissions at the Adult Crisis Center and collaborating with a clinical team of clinicians, psychiatrists, service coordinators, and direct care staff to address individual mental health needs.

Schedule

Saturday & Sunday, 7:00 am – 7:30 pm.

Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive nursing services, including holistic assessments incorporating family and environmental factors.
  • Collects and documents patient health history, measures and records vital signs, completes health assessments, and performs limited exams.
  • Obtains, processes, and handles lab specimens; manages, controls, and implements medication administration programs.
  • Performs minor procedures and treatments within the designated specialty area.
  • Assesses psychiatric symptoms, psychosocial issues, medication side effects, potential medical problems, mental status, and treatment regimen needs through in-person or phone contact with patients and collateral historians.
  • Consults with psychiatrists, verifies provider orders, explains treatment changes to patients/families, and coordinates changes with other providers (e.g., case managers, pharmacists).
  • Monitors patient response, administers intramuscular injections as ordered, and coordinates clinical needs with the treatment team.
  • Tracks and provides lab results and investigative findings to psychiatrists; administers and tracks clinically necessary rating scales (e.g., AIMS for tardive dyskinesia).
  • Completes and submits documentation regarding patient care and condition; reviews quality and effectiveness of services provided by other service providers.
  • Provides patients and families with supportive resources; educates on health, wellness, and daily living activities; develops and delivers specialized health training and education to staff.
  • Provides case management, care coordination, referrals, and follow-up; evaluates outcomes and adjusts plans as necessary.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Vocational, Associate’s, or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or a program meeting RN licensure requirements).
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Kansas.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Qualifications

  • Three years of nursing experience in psychiatric inpatient or outpatient settings is preferred.
