About the role

The Department of Public Safety's mission is to safeguard and preserve the lives and property of the people of North Carolina through preparation, prevention, and protection with integrity and honor. The Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention works to reduce and prevent juvenile delinquency by effectively intervening, educating, and treating youth to strengthen families and increase public safety.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and supervise juveniles while housed, at school, and during all daily activities.
  • Maintain a secure environment, routinely monitor and observe juveniles, and complete daily records including documenting safety violations and security breaches.
  • Conduct activity briefings for shift personnel, handle crisis intervention events, address behavioral issues, and update youth progress.
  • Communicate treatment plans to clients and provide feedback to the treatment team.
  • Utilize counseling techniques and crisis intervention methods, implement individual and group treatment plans, administer assessments, and review treatment strategies.
  • Administer physical and mechanical restraints and medication administration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience working with the juvenile/family client population and/or related human services experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Necessary special qualifications: Must attend and successfully complete the Juvenile Justice Officer Basic Training Certification Program.
  • Must pass a Criminal Background check, Drug Screening test, Psychological test, Sexual Risk Screening test, and Physical exam.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, at least 20 years old, and have a valid driver's license.

  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary service team.

Benefits

This is a full-time position with State Benefits, including paid vacation, paid sick leave, paid holidays, retirement, and health insurance. The position offers an annual salary increase with a step pay plan, starting at $41,558 and increasing to $54,078 upon reaching step 6. Shift work is required, including weekends and holidays, with a shift premium available for 2nd and 3rd shifts.

Pay

The starting salary for a Youth Counselor is $41,558, and it increases annually based on relevant qualifications, internal equity, and budgetary considerations. The position is eligible for the employee Referral Bonus program.

Schedule

This is a full-time position requiring shift work, including weekends and holidays. Candidates are eligible for a shift premium of 10% for 2nd and 3rd shifts.
