About the role

We're hiring Youth Counselors, Juvenile Detention Specialists to join our team at Abraxas Academy. Located in Morgantown, PA, you'll help at-risk adolescents build better futures.

Responsibilities

  • Direct daily activities of juvenile males in programming using acceptable behavioral management principles.
  • Exercise independent judgment in crisis situations.
  • Maintain regular communication with supervisor and co-workers.
  • Ensure client safety and security through facility security duties.
  • Screen and process intakes according to program policy.
  • Respond appropriately to client behavior and intervene in emergency situations.
  • Use Safe Crisis Management techniques and skills.

Requirements

  • Prompt and dependable.
  • Able to establish and maintain appropriate professional boundaries (including confidentiality).
  • Able to maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Able to follow direction, solve problems, and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Able to deal with people who are in treatment and justice-involved.
  • Mature, grounded, and sensible in various situations.
  • Able to enforce rules in a firm yet supportive manner.
  • Able to speak and write clearly.
  • Computer literate and proficient with Microsoft Office Word and Outlook.
  • Able to guide and instruct facility residents in applicable rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Able to learn relevant rules, regulations, and procedures of the facility, including applicable requirements of licensing and accreditation.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or sixty (60) credit hours from an accredited college or university.
  • At least twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • A valid drivers’ license.
  • Clearances (PA State Police, Child Abuse, FBI).
  • Pass a pre-employment physical exam, drug screen & TB test.

  • Ability to handle crisis situations and maintain professionalism.
