Yard Worker
About the role
The Yard Worker is responsible for all duties related to truck movement within the yard. Primary duties would include shuttling trucks, jumpstarting trucks, forklifting trucks, fueling trucks with diesel and DEF, staging equipment and minor technical repairs/duties such as disconnecting and reconnecting battery cables.
Responsibilities
- Move trucks and forklifts as needed.
- Jumpstart trucks and stage them to proper repair areas.
- Forklift trucks into the service/inspection bays as needed.
- Fuel trucks with Diesel and DEF as needed and add fuel supplement when instructed.
- Remove trucks from the RGN’s when applicable. Move all unmanned trucks needing inspection to the designated inspection parking stalls.
- Perform full truck and trailer inventory on a daily basis or more frequently as needed.
- Work closely with the Safety Lane Service Leader for daily instruction on yard duties and setting priorities to be completed each day.
- Ensure trucks are plugged into the outlets as needed and disconnect batteries as needed when instructed.
- Stage FS trucks for inspection when required and be able to communicate effectively to the prep inspection supervisor when faced with unforeseen challenges.
- Work in conjunction with other yard staff to ensure forklifts are being maintained and inspected daily.
- Work in varying outdoor conditions including the extreme cold and hot throughout the year.
- Properly lockout tag out any trucks as needed.
- Maintain a clean and organized yard. Move trucks and trailers as needed.
- Assist drivers in the yard with the equipment as needed.
- Stack and unstack trailers as needed.
- Add/remove deck inserts, saddles, and goosenecks to multi-axle and Schnabel trailers when requested.
- Create steerable multi-axle trailers upon operations request by swapping out trailer components and connecting air lines, pig tails, etc.
- Assist in creating and maintaining the yard layout and relocate trailing equipment to create more space when equipment returns to the yard.
- Report and/or make various small repairs as needed when found on the trailers such as; replacing lights, air lines, fittings, pig tails and other repairs primarily using hand tools.
- Perform, as needed, cleaning out of trucks and sorting through MEC equipment restocking salvageable equipment and disposing of unusable items.
Requirements
- A High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience with operating vehicle and heavy equipment in a transportation environment preferred.
- A valid driver’s license is preferred but not required.
- Become forklift certified through the ATS onsite training program.
- Must be able to operate all yard related equipment.
- Must be self- motivated, able to multi-task and work independently.
- Must be a team player, amenable to a variety of work projects and work conditions.
- Good decision-making, problem-solving, attention to detail and customer service skills (internal/external).
- Experience using basic mechanic hand tools to make minor repairs on trailer equipment.
- Basic understanding of tractor/trailer air systems.
- Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Effective communication skills (written, listening and verbal).
- Must be able to work a flexible work schedule when needed and work overtime as needed.
- Willing and able to travel infrequently, including overnight travel.

Skills
- Ability to operate various forklifts and other material movement equipment including semi tractors.
- Use of hand tools and power hand tools to perform light maintenance or cleaning or enter data into computer.
- Inspection and assessment of equipment and loads to ensure safe transportation.
- Positioning self under, on top of, or in awkward positions to secure loads or fix things.
- Communication with others regarding work questions, processes, procedures and timelines.
- Ability to move/position parts, tools, equipment: - From 1 to 10 lbs. frequently - From 11 to 25 lbs. intermittently - From 25 to 50 lbs. occasionally - Over 50 lbs. occasionally
- Exposure to: - Loud noises constantly requiring hearing protection. - Temperature extremes intermittently due to outside weather conditions. - Dirt, dust, grease, chemicals and odors constantly. - Situations requiring eye protection and steel toed boots.

Pay
The anticipated hourly pay range for this position is between $21.00 - $26.00. Hourly pay rate offered is determined by relevant experience, education, certifications, and geographic location as compared to others doing substantially similar work.
Schedule
Position may require work responsibilities outside of normal business hours and infrequent travel may be required.
