About the role
Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, the Yard Hostler is responsible for ensuring that trailers are moved within the yard in a safe and efficient manner by utilizing a Terminal Tractor. The role also includes yard management, maintaining good housekeeping, and ensuring adherence to yard rules and standards.
Responsibilities
- Safety
- Ensure effective and safe use of all equipment and PPE (personal protective equipment) as needed
- Complete pre-trip inspections and maintain energy source for Terminal Tractor and other equipment
- Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by following company and regulatory standards
- Safely operate a Terminal Tractor to move trailers in and out of dock doors and parking stalls
- Operational Process
- Maintain trailers by inspecting mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment
- Perform trailer inventory checks and yard audits
- Ensure quality by maintaining records, logs, and forms (e.g., pre-trip inspection sheets)
- Perform other duties as assigned, including operating Powered Industrial Trucks (PIT) such as forklifts, electric pallet jacks, and other equipment
- Deliver results while prioritizing customer needs (internal and external)
- Use electronic equipment to track inventory accurately within the facility
- Collaborate with the team to prevent yard bottlenecks and improve efficiency
- Build strong relationships with team members and business partners
Requirements
- Experience, Knowledge, & Education
- Minimum of one year of Yard Hostler operation experience (preferred)
- Prior exposure to CPG and/or Food & Beverage industries (preferred)
- Able to demonstrate decision-making and problem-solving skills
- Basic understanding of computer systems and/or warehouse management (WM) systems
- Fluent in English; additional language skills beneficial
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and climb steps/ladders
- Occasionally lift, move, and place up to 75 pounds
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts, varying temperatures, and weather conditions
- Ability to be certified for and responsibly operate Terminal Tractor, Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) (e.g., forklifts, electric pallet jacks)
- Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by following company standards
- At least 18 years old
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Active driver’s license and clean driving record
Schedule
Shift Rotation - Weekday Days:
- Week 1: Monday – Thursday, 5:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Week 2: Monday – Wednesday, 5:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Pay
The compensation for this position includes base pay plus a bonus target:
- $21.00 per hour
- 5% target quarterly bonus
The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
