About the role
The primary functions of the Yard Hostler/Warehouse position are to load and unload freight in a safe and efficient manner while ensuring positive customer service relations. This Yard Hostler /Warehouse function is expected to operate yard tractors to organize the parking/storage of trailers. This position works the night shift, Sunday through Wednesday, 10 hours per day.
Responsibilities
- Inspect trailers for secured loads before pulling from door.
- Verify HazMat in loads to remove/add placards.
- Ensure trailers going North and/or South are “road ready.”
- Daily inspection of Yard Goat for proper fluid levels.
- Utilize proper precautions in backing trailers to doors while doors are open on trailer.
- Load and unload freight from/to all types of vehicles.
- Attach tags or marking freight with appropriate identifying information.
- Move freight, stock, and other materials to and from storage and production areas, yard, loading docks, delivery vehicles and containers by hand, pallet jack, forklift, or other required equipment.
- Check specifications of materials loaded or unloaded against information contained in work order or bill of lading.
- Complete appropriate paperwork properly.
- Absorb and provide customer service over phone and face-to-face.
- Read work orders or receive oral instructions to determine work assignments and material and equipment needs.
- Warehouse cleanup.
- Consistently adhere to all Span/MSTS Safety and Fit for Duty policies as well as attend safety and team meetings.
- Maintain proper vehicle/equipment inspection and cleaning.
- Assist other coworkers and departments as requested.
- Load and unload vehicles such as trucks, vans, flat beds trucks, box trucks or tractor-trailers.
- Mark incoming freight appropriately.
- Move freight around warehouse using a forklift or other moving equipment.
- Assist customers as necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School diploma (or equivalent) required.
- Transportation or freight experience preferred.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the necessary qualifications to successfully perform the duties of the position.
- Extra credit if you have:
- Hazardous Material Certification (Non-DOT)
- Forklift Certification
- Valid Class A CDL
- Clean driving record
- Valid medical card
Physical Requirements
- Ability to move up to 200 pounds utilizing proper moving equipment.
- Ability to independently move up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to user proper lifting techniques when needed.
- Ability to do repetitive motions which may include fingering, grasping, reaching, bending and/or feeling.

- Ability to sit, walk and stand for long periods of time.
Work Environment
- Work is either performed in a warehouse environment, outside in the elements or in a company vehicle.
- Exposure to exhaust fumes is likely.
- Overtime may be mandatory at times.
- Conditions may also include exposure to environmental noise.
