About the Role

The Diagnostic Technologist performs diagnostic testing according to established departmental procedures, ensuring the delivery of quality patient care. This includes X-ray, CT scan, ultrasound, MRI, nuclear medicine, mammography, interventional procedures, and mobile mammography. The Technologist operates diagnostic equipment, including peripheral equipment, in a safe and efficient manner to obtain optimal test results and manages the patient during procedures to meet quality care standards.

This position supports organizational goals through quality customer service, performance improvement efforts, and teamwork. The role also actively participates in and supports student clinical education activities where applicable.

Responsibilities

• Perform diagnostic testing as directed by physicians at a competent technical level with minimal supervision.
• Operate diagnostic equipment safely and efficiently to obtain optimal test results.
• Manage patients during diagnostic procedures to ensure quality care standards are met.
• Maintain supplies and report equipment issues to appropriate staff.
• Demonstrate department-specific competencies as outlined in the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.
• Serve diverse patient populations across multiple modalities, including but not limited to:
  • Radiology: Skeletal and body systems (pulmonary, cardiac/cardiovascular, GI, GU/GYN, oncology).
  • CT Imaging: Cardio-pulmonary, vascular, neuron, GI, GU, GYN, skeletal/muscular conditions (e.g., PVD, CVA/TIA, COPD, CHF, HNP, oncology).
  • Mammography: Mammary disease and disorders.
  • MRI: Cardiac/cardiovascular, mammary, GI, endocrine, renal, skeletal conditions (e.g., CAD, PVD, CVA/TIA, COPD, CHF, oncology).
  • Nuclear Medicine: Cardiac/cardiovascular, renal, skeletal, pulmonary conditions (e.g., CAD, PE, cholecystitis, oncology).
  • Special Procedures: Stents/declotting vascular, renal conditions (e.g., PVD, renal, oncology).
  • Ultrasound: Cholecystitis, BPH, oncology, uterine fibroids, fetal ultrasound.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited radiological technologist school.
• Licensed by the State of New Jersey, Department of Environmental Protection (for all modalities except Ultrasound; ARDMS required for Ultrasound).
• BLS for Healthcare Providers certification.
• Registered or registry-eligible with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT); if registry-eligible at hire, registration must be obtained within 90 days.
• 1+ year of diagnostic testing experience preferred.
• Ability to multitask with attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
• Proficiency in clinical applications (training provided within 30-60 days of hire if not already proficient).
• State license and ARRT certification must be renewed annually (state license expires at year-end; ARRT expires on incumbent’s date of birth).

Work Environment

• Potential exposure to hazards of a hospital environment, including infectious diseases, blood-borne pathogens, injury, and hazardous substances (e.g., electromagnetic radiation).
• Physical demands:
  • Ability to stand for the majority of the time (except MRI technologists, who may sit in front of a CRT monitor for extended periods).
  • Extensive pushing, pulling, and lifting of patients, with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Reporting Relationships

This position reports to the Radiology Manager, Senior Diagnostic Technologist, Clinical Director (Cath Lab), and Practice Manager (Urgent Care Centers).
