Division: CAS – Department: Biology – Intermediate-level role reporting to Peyton Prater.
About the role
Support faculty-led field research by assisting with outdoor data collection, equipment setup, and accurate record-keeping. This role contributes to ecological and environmental projects conducted on and off campus and develops hands-on skills in safe, professional fieldwork and basic data management.
Responsibilities
- Conduct outdoor field surveys to collect biological, ecological, or environmental data.
- Record, organize, and maintain accurate field notes and data sheets using digital or written formats.
- Assist with setup, calibration, and use of field research equipment (e.g., GPS units, sampling nets, environmental sensors).
- Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and peers to complete field projects and research goals.
- Ensure safety protocols are followed in outdoor environments (use of protective gear, awareness of hazards).
- Contribute to data entry, preliminary analysis, and preparation of research reports or presentations.
- Engage respectfully with local communities, landowners, and partners during off-campus fieldwork.
- Demonstrate initiative by learning new field methods, research tools, and environmental monitoring techniques.
