Duties

  • Provide both individual and group writing appointments, as well as presentation coaching appointments, to Bachelor of Commerce students.
  • Tutor students on responses to the assigned topic, use of sources, organization, argumentation, style, proficiency with language, and aspects of business writing style.
  • Provide feedback on aspects of students’ oral communication and presentation skills, such as verbal and non-verbal delivery (pace, eye contact, intonation, structure, etc.).
  • Tutor students on notetaking, modes of argument, and methods for reading, planning, drafting and revising texts.
  • Respond to student questions, develop pedagogical materials or resources related to writing or communication skills, and collaborate with discipline-based instructors to develop and teach tailored workshops on aspects of academic writing.
  • Support students in developing presentation and oral communication skills through both online (using WCOnline and Zoom) and in-person appointments.

Requirements

This position requires a minimum availability of 150-300 hours for the weeks of Sept 1/26 to Apr 30/27. Hours will be scheduled by mutual agreement and depending on the needs of the Centre.

Qualifications

The Centre for Professional Skills (CPS) is looking for a candidate with:

  • A strong background in writing and communication skills.
  • Experience providing tutoring and coaching services to students.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of business writing styles and presentation techniques.

Skills

  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback.
  • Proficiency with technology, particularly in using WCOnline and Zoom for virtual appointments.
  • Experience working with undergraduate students.

Pay

  • Writing Instructor 1: $53.41 per hour, plus 4% vacation pay
  • Writing Instructor 2: $57.42 per hour, plus 6% vacation pay
  • Writing Instructor 2 (Priority): $60.29 per hour, plus 6% vacation pay

Schedule

Contract hours: 150-300 hours between September 1, 2026 and April 30, 2027. Schedule Information: Hours will be scheduled by mutual agreement and depending on the needs of the Centre.
