WRAIR - Genetics and Parasite Biology Research Fellowship

What will I be doing?

As the selected candidate, you will participate in research using a variety of molecular biology assays and bioinformatic tools to analyze malaria parasite genomes for the purpose of selecting genetically diverse strains from different geographic areas to use for controlled human malaria infection (CHMI) to provide support to anti-malaria drugs and vaccines testing. In addition, as the selected candidate, you will engage extensively with internal and external researchers on the culture adaptation and cloning of field malaria parasite strains.

In particular, you will gain hands-on knowledge of working with cultures of malaria parasites at different stages of development under cGMP conditions, microsatellite analysis, targeted sequencing, SNP analysis and WGS analysis. This combination of assays is extremely difficult to find. Furthermore, you will be conducting analyses using the most state-of-the-art software and bioinformatics tools, such as DNASTAR’s Genomics Suite and GeneMapper.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
