Workforce Development Structural Fitting Instructor

Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education serving the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York. The College seeks an Adjunct Instructor in the Workforce Development Department to teach up to 1500 hours per year. Teaching load is based upon student enrollment and staffing needs, with instruction potentially occurring during the day, evening, or weekend.

About the Role

This position will teach Marine Trades Training (MTT) Structural Fitting in Workforce Development. The Adjunct Structural Fitting Instructor supports the MTT Structural Fitting program by meeting training needs, instructing students in safety practices, structural fitting tools and equipment, blueprint reading, math and measurement skills, and workplace readiness. The role may also include other duties assigned by the Director.

Responsibilities

• Instruct students in identifying and performing appropriate safety practices and procedures, including ensuring weld lines are clear and safe.
• Teach students to recognize, identify, and properly use structural fitting tools and equipment.
• Instruct on operating and troubleshooting basic maintenance of structural fitting equipment.
• Help students understand and identify job requirements, ship structures, ship orientation, and traversing terminology.
• Demonstrate competency in reading, understanding, and applying blueprint knowledge to course projects.
• Teach math and measurement skills applicable to assigned activities and projects.
• Instruct students in the use of structural fitting tools and steel shapes to complete repairs and build steel ships, including fairing deck plates and installing stiffeners.
• Promote workplace readiness, including effective communication and work ethic.
• Plan and organize instruction to maximize student learning and modify methods to meet diverse student needs.
• Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently, returning work promptly to support learning.
• Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grades according to deadlines.
• May be required to assist in emergencies as declared by the Governor.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Significant work experience within the welding and structural fitting field.
• Prior experience delivering or developing training.
• Passion for the discipline and commitment to a student-centered philosophy.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Willingness to serve traditional and non-traditional students from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to adapt instructional methods to meet diverse student needs.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience or strong interest in teaching and inspiring adult learners.
• Must be able to work at all campus locations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Community college teaching experience.
• Teaching experience in online, hybrid, or traditional face-to-face modalities.
• Proficiency in using instructional technologies and learning management systems (e.g., Canvas).
• Demonstrated ability to measure, assess, and align student outcomes within courses or programs.

Pay

$40–$50 per hour.

Schedule

Varies based on schedule and contract. Position is part-time with no guarantee of continued employment.
