About the Role

We are seeking an organized, self-motivated Structural Welding Instructor for long-term travel to support strategic sourcing initiatives at various Focus Factories. This position reports to the Chief of Training for Strategic Sourcing and to the applicable on-site Chief of Training while traveling. Assignments include Business Travel and/or Extended Work Assignments at locations such as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Florence, South Carolina; Jacksonville, FL; and Mobile, Alabama.

The instructor will train supplier staff in structural welding processes, wire types, and related courses, emphasizing safety, procedural compliance, and professional development.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Instruct multiple welding-related classroom courses, including Workmanship, AWPSS, and Safety Briefs.
  • Instruct structural-related classroom courses.
  • Provide quality oversight of supplier-embedded instructors to support site training needs.
  • Direct and assess hands-on training, including practice sessions and tests.
  • Enforce safety rules and regulations during training and deck plate audits.
  • Assess student performance and identify nonconformance to policies, procedures, and technical documents.
  • Support course content reviews and related activities.
  • Conduct assessments as needed or scheduled.
  • Manage class rosters and training OQE submittal paperwork.
  • Meet with Focus Factory Leadership regarding student performance as required.
  • Consistently grade tests and quizzes to ensure knowledge capture and understanding of training topics.
  • Communicate with other Training team members to advance work and address issues.
  • Support special training projects as required.
  • Contribute to Training department goals and objectives with additional responsibilities as assigned.

Schedule

  • Generally, 1st shift hours; supplier site hours vary, and flexibility is necessary.
  • Ability to work additional overtime as directed, including weekends.
  • Ability to participate in business travel (up to 75%).

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 4 years of welding trade experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience at Electric Boat.
  • Ability to participate in business travel up to 75%.

Preferred

  • Advanced educational coursework, including certifications, associate’s degree, or other advanced education.
  • Instructing/teaching experience.
  • VT (Visual Testing) Experience.
  • Leadership experience (e.g., working leader, MDU, SS).
  • Currently qualified and proficient in 3 or more welding processes.
  • Experience with non-destructive testing, AWPSS, and SRT.
  • Proficiency with MS Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Proficiency with communication and virtual technologies.

Skills

  • Strong ability to prioritize and complete multiple complex assignments.
  • Strong ability to lead and direct in classroom and workshop environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong willingness to think critically and problem-solve.
  • Strong commitment to teaching others and leading student classes.
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service, safety, and procedural compliance.
  • Willingness to learn and take on additional responsibilities and duties as needed.
  • Ability to teach new courses and adapt to team members with varying learning abilities.
  • Professional engagement with supplier employees.
  • Comfort with new teaching technologies and adaptable teaching approaches.
  • Ability to complete and maintain NDT requirements for Welding Qualifications.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to maneuver throughout the facility and units to support all areas as required.
