Workforce Adjunct – Plumbing Instructor

About the role

NOVA Workforce Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in the designated discipline/field of study to students from a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences. Teaching may include a variety of formats: face-to-face, remote and online.

Responsibilities

• Provide hands-on, guided, differentiated instructions to students enrolled in the courses, as specified in the schedule and course contract.
• Prepare course materials and lesson plans.
• Conduct efficient and effective classroom management.
• Provide students with an approved syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies in line with those of the institution, assignments and deliverables, timelines, and evaluation criteria.
• Use the institution’s learning management system to post syllabus, assignments, and other materials and to communicate with students, in a timely manner.
• Deliver course content using a variety of teaching styles and provide interesting and engaging assignments that demonstrate the real-world applications of concepts covered.
• Maintain records of enrollment and attendance, assessments and grades, and submit class rosters and grade sheets by the deadlines established by the department.
• Maintain a hazard-free environment and practice safety in lab(s) or classroom.
• Adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with college and departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.

Requirements

• Comprehensive understanding of water distribution, drainage, venting, and waste systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.
• Working knowledge of local, state, and national plumbing codes (e.g., Uniform Plumbing Code | [UPC], International Plumbing Code [IPC], and Virginia Plumbing Code).
• Knowledge of OSHA 10/30, lockout/tagout procedures, confined space safety, and PPE requirements for plumbing environments.
• Ability to demonstrate plumbing installations, soldering, and mechanical joining techniques in a classroom or lab environment.
• Ability to teach hands-on technical content clearly and effectively to diverse learners.
• Understanding of the proper installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing fixtures including sinks, toilets, showers, and water heaters.
• Skill in aligning instructional content with industry standards and certification requirements.
• Skilled in cutting, threading, bending, and joining pipe materials safely and accurately.

Qualifications

• Prior teaching or training experience in the subject field/industry or must demonstrate evidence of teaching potential.
• Practical working experience in the subject field/industry and related industries.
• Combination of education and industry credentials to demonstrate content expertise applicable to the course being taught.
• Familiarity with subject area certification processes, guidelines, and procedures.
• Working knowledge of computer applications and the ability to use computers for providing class presentation.

Skills

• Instruction and training: Develop and deliver engaging, hands-on training programs for students in maintenance and repair skills.
• Curriculum development: Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop and update curriculum materials.
• Ability to work with adult learners and students from diverse language backgrounds and varying levels of proficiency.

Pay

The hourly rate for this position is $25.00 - $35.00, based on experience and education level.

Schedule

Classes will mostly be evenings and weekends, with a varying schedule.
