About the Role

Bechtel is the licensing, engineering, procurement, and construction partner on TerraPower’s Natrium team. Selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for its Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, Natrium is participating in a DOE initiative to re-establish U.S. leadership in nuclear energy that provides matching funding to industry to design and build an operational advanced reactor.

TerraPower, a leading advanced generation technology company founded by former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, will deploy its 345 MWe sodium fast reactor (SFR), called Natrium. The Natrium plant features an advanced, cost-competitive reactor design that is safer, simpler, easier, and less costly to construct, operate, and maintain. It also includes an innovative molten salt energy storage system designed to complement solar and wind power by balancing production fluctuations.

Other Team Natrium partners include GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, Energy Northwest, PacifiCorp, Duke Energy, and support from national laboratories and universities. This DOE program has the potential to be the largest funding initiative for advanced nuclear power in U.S. history.

Workface planning (WFP) is an essential resource within the Advance Work Packaging (AWP) construction organization. The Workface Planner will scope and plan Installation Work Packages (IWPs) for all project commodities, ensuring all necessary drawings, deliverables, engineered data, and resources are available and constraints are removed before releasing digital IWPs to the field construction team.

Responsibilities

• Supports preparation and development of IWPs in close coordination with Field Engineers, Superintendents, and other project personnel.
• Reviews work scope, checking sequencing, access, resources, equipment needs, pre-work, materials, and support services.
• Develops and assembles detailed IWPs per project guidelines, including installation drawings, model snapshots, vendor drawings, inspection test records, and other engineering deliverables.
• Prepares scoping sketches, material takeoffs, and required construction engineering deliverables.
• Verifies completeness of engineering drawings, installation details, engineering data, and vendor information to ensure successful construction of assigned IWPs.
• Monitors IWP quality to ensure scoping and preparation are done correctly the first time.
• Monitors project schedule and ensures timely delivery of IWPs; coordinates with Project Controls, planners, and stakeholders to align IWP issuance with project priorities.
• Facilitates identification and removal of constraints.
• Participates in 3D and 4D model reviews to ensure construction installation requirements are preserved during design development.
• Coordinates with procurement to track IWP material delivery status.
• Coordinates with design engineering to ensure design completion aligns with the construction schedule.
• Maintains IWP input in Teamworks and other tools, updating as design is completed and revised.
• Works with the Turnover Coordinator to track IWPs and inspection records to completion.
• Develops status reports using project databases spanning multiple Bechtel Standard Applications (BSAPs).
• Conducts field inspections, including extensive walking, climbing ladders/scaffolding, working on elevated platforms, uneven surfaces, and in confined spaces. Some lifting may be required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and 2-3 years of relevant experience, or 6-9 years of relevant work experience.
• Working experience at jobsites as a Field Engineer or Construction Engineer on large industrial projects is preferred.
• Ability to walk into and out of the project site (enter/egress).
• Ability to use appropriate standard-issued Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) required for assigned tasks (e.g., harness, life vest, lift buckets).

Skills

• Knowledge of assembling drawings and deliverables for smaller scopes of work or preparation of installation work packages for construction professionals.
• Proficient in reading drawings, interpreting design, specifications, and industry standards and codes.
• Prior experience in work scope packaging, material take-offs, and quantity reporting.
• Knowledge of digital construction planning tools, 3D model-based work planning, project scheduling systems, construction databases, and applicable construction procedures is preferred.
• Knowledge of completions management systems, model review platforms, digital work packaging tools, 4D planning applications, project controls systems, document management platforms, and construction data integration tools is preferred.
• Preferred experience supporting mechanical and piping construction activities, including equipment installation, piping installation/testing, valve installation, bolting, hydrostatic testing, flushing, system turnover, and mechanical completion activities.
• Preferred experience developing IWPs and coordinating construction planning activities for mechanical equipment, piping systems, pipe supports, and associated commodities in an EPC environment.
• Working knowledge of piping isometrics, P&IDs, equipment arrangement drawings, piping specifications, welding requirements, test packages, and construction work package development.
• Experience with material forecasting, workface readiness reviews, constraint management, and construction sequencing for mechanical and piping work fronts.
• Preferred experience supporting system-based construction execution, turnover, and completions processes on industrial, power, nuclear, or large EPC projects.
