Our Staff Counsel team is excited to add a California‑licensed Workers’ Compensation Defense Attorney to our growing practice. This part‑time role offers true flexibility—remote, hybrid, or in‑office—with in‑person Board appearances as needed. We hire across multiple levels based on experience.

Position Overview

  • Investigates and manages Workers’ Compensation cases from inception until conclusion through dismissal, settlement, or trial.
  • Works with adjusters and clients to resolve claims as expeditiously and efficiently as possible.
  • Engages in routine motion practice, discovery, and research.
  • Handles routine depositions, hearings, conferences, and Trials.
  • Travels to the boards as required.

What you need to apply

  • Experience handling workers' compensation matters.
  • A valid driver's license, an acceptable MVR, and an ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Admitted to the bar and must be licensed to practice law in the jurisdictions where assigned.
  • Advocacy: Knowledge and ability to assist, defend or plead for another.
  • Communication: Knowledge and ability to deliberate and precisely exchange thoughts and opinions with one or more persons and to effectively translate legal language and ideas into layman's terms.
  • Organization Skills: Ability to categorize and prioritize work and information to effectively maximize productivity.

Desired skills and experience

  • Computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Word, Lexis/Westlaw, and daily management of e-mail and calendar.
  • Able to work in a team environment with other attorneys, adjusters and other claims professionals and support staff.
  • Investigative Skills: Ability to follow up step by step on inquiry or observation; to trace or track, search or examine with care and accuracy. Specifically, must take evidence that may be used in reaching a legal conclusion.
  • Legal Research: Ability to locate cases, treaties, codified laws and statutes aimed at the discovery and interpretation of law and to draw a reasonable and accurate conclusion or render an opinion there from.
  • Courtroom Skills: Appropriate courtroom behavior, attire and decorum and familiarity with the rules and regulations that govern proceedings and conduct in courts of law or other legal forums and tribunals.
  • Dedication to providing the highest professional service to clients and claims professionals.

The target hiring range for this role may vary based on geographic location and other factors, including merit or performance, demonstrated proficiency, skills for the role, education, travel requirements, and experience. Additional compensation may include an annual bonus (which could take the form of a general bonus, sales incentive, or short-term incentive), long-term incentive or spot recognition awards. The posted range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
