About the role
National Interstate, a member of Great American Insurance Group, is seeking a fully remote Senior Workers Comp Claims Specialist based in California. This role involves managing a large inventory of highly complex claims, conducting comprehensive investigations, and negotiating settlements within prescribed authority. The position requires expertise in California Workers Compensation and the ability to convey complex information to insureds, claimants, and external partners.
Responsibilities
- Manages a large inventory of highly complex claims to evaluate compensability/liability.
- Strategically orchestrates and leads comprehensive claims investigations to confirm coverage and determine liability, compensability, and damages.
- Analyzes and negotiates appropriate claim settlements/reserves within prescribed authority.
- May attend arbitrations, mediations, depositions, or trials.
- Conveys highly complex information regarding coverage and settlements to insureds, claimants, and external partners.
- Authorizes payments in accordance with assigned authority limit, ensuring timely disbursement.
- Maintains accurate and detailed claim files, including all correspondence, reports, and settlement agreements.
- May have responsibility for performance and coaching of staff and may participate in decisions regarding talent selection, development, and performance management for direct reports.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Risk Management and Insurance, Finance, or a related field or equivalent experience.
- Generally, a minimum of 13 years of experience in property and casualty claims handling.
- Completion of or continuing progress toward a professional designation preferred, such as Associate in Claims (AIC).
- Prefer California Workers Compensation experience.

- Works at the highest authority limits on assignments of the highest technical complexity and coordination.
- Excellent analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrates expert knowledge of insurance policies, coverage, and claims handling procedures.
- Maintains and leverages knowledge of industry laws and regulations.
- Advanced ability to organize and prioritize caseloads, ensuring timely resolution of claims.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build relationships and lead negotiations.
- Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Recognized as a subject matter expert within the company, potentially operating at a peer level to management.
Pay
Salary Range: $95,000.00 - $105,000.00
