Worker, Utility (Newport News)
Virginia Natural Gas (VNG) is looking for dynamic, career-motivated individuals to join one of the Top Workplaces in Hampton Roads as part of our Field Operations team. This is a bargaining unit position (IBEW Local 50) and a DOT-covered classification subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening. Transitioning military personnel are encouraged to apply.
About the role
Work is predominantly outdoors in all weather conditions. Candidates must be able to drive safely, work extended hours, travel 5% of the time, and wear company-provided Personal Protective Equipment. The position is based in Newport News, VA.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a member of a crew engaged in installing and repairing gas mains and service lines.
- Participate in making taps on mains and services.
- Assist with all distribution activities involved in the installation, repair, and maintenance of the distribution system.
- Complete jobs by digging, shoring, repairing leaks, testing, and wrapping pipe.
- Perform work with hand tools, air tools, shovels, etc., during distribution activities while adhering to all safety and work rules.
- Assist other crew members in all activities as required.
- Ensure the truck is stocked with equipment and supplies; maintain distribution vehicles, tools, and other equipment in neat and orderly condition.
- Live in the service area and be subject to call-out for emergency service, including stand-by duty and emergency call-out.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- No previous experience required; this is an entry-level position.
- Must pass the DOT drug test.
- Operator Qualified in accordance with Company Plan.
- Must have a valid VA state driver’s license.
- Must live within a 30-minute drive from the Newport News office for on-call/emergency response purposes.
- Physically able to stoop, bend, crawl, walk, climb ladders, and lift weights in excess of 75 pounds.
- Must have a keen sense of smell, hearing, vision, and color identification.
- Able to work in all types of terrain and weather conditions.
