About the role

Operate a mass transit vehicle along designated routes, adhere to established schedules, and provide safe, reliable transportation for passengers.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a mass transit vehicle along designated routes and adhere to established schedules.
  • Collect fare from passengers, sell passes, and ensure accurate transactions.
  • Provide information on routes and schedules for subscription services to prospective passengers.
  • Communicate transit policies and procedures to passengers.
  • Complete and submit required documentation, including trip reports, accident and incident reports, and equipment malfunctions, in a timely manner.
  • Prepare the bus for operation by checking brakes and other equipment to ensure proper functionality.
  • Monitor the two-way radio for communications, and report any unusual conditions such as accidents, passenger incidents, or traffic issues.
  • Refuel the bus as necessary.
  • Install and remove chains when required.

Requirements

  • Must hold a valid Class B Washington State commercial driver’s license with a passenger endorsement and no air brake restrictions and maintain a clean driving record throughout employment.
  • Must secure a Puget Sound Naval Shipyard security clearance.
  • Must be at least 18 years old at the time of application.
  • Ability to interact with passengers courteously and independently.
  • Accurately handle cash transactions and maintain a cash fund.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to maintaining a safe driving record and excellent attendance.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License at the time of hire, with 12 months driving experience and an excellent driving record.
  • Must have the legal right to work in the U.S.
  • Must have a High School diploma or GED.
  • Must be able to report to a bus between 4:45am and 6:00am and work until 6:30pm or later on occasion.
  • Must be able to train in the evenings and on weekends.
  • Must be willing and able to take and pass a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must be willing to work in a safety-sensitive position subject to random drug screening during employment.
  • Must meet fitness requirements for the job as a CDL holder under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration/Department of Transportation guidelines.

Driving Record Requirements

  • Total points from incidents/citations in the past three years must equal 3 or less. Points are assigned as follows:
    • 1 point: Accident (not at fault)
    • 2 points: Accident (at fault), Operating without lights on, Carpool/toll lane violation, Driving on the shoulder, Driving without insurance, Failure to appear, Failure to signal, Following too close, Impeding traffic (travelling too slowly), Improper lane travel, Speeding (0 – 8 mph), Distracted or Inattentive Driving
    • 3 points: Improper child restraint, Failure to yield to emergency vehicle, Speeding (9 – 12 mph), Driving without a valid driver’s license, Seatbelt use violation, Speeding in a school or construction zone (1 – 5 mph over the speed limit)
    • 4 points: Speeding in a school or construction zone (6 mph and over the speed limit), Cell phone use or texting violation, Deferred prosecution for negligent driving, reckless driving, hit and run, leaving an accident scene, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Driving too fast for conditions, Failure to yield or stop, disobeying a road sign, Red light camera violation, Illegal passing, turning or lane change, Open alcohol container, Speeding (13 mph over the speed limit), Violation of bus stop paddle, Eluding law enforcement
  • Never Eligible Offenses (lifetime ineligibility): Any conviction surrounding a fatal accident (vehicular homicide, manslaughter, etc.), using a vehicle in commission of a felony, and/or vehicular assault.
  • 10 Year Ineligible Offenses: Any conviction for negligent driving, reckless driving, hit and run, leaving an accident scene, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • 5 Year Ineligible Offenses: Any conviction for suspension/revocation related to a 4-point offense.
  • 3 Year Ineligible Offenses: Any conviction or combination of convictions earning 4 or more points.
