WOODCRAFTER

About the role

You will serve as a WOODCRAFTER in the Preservation Shop 970, Production Resources Department Manager 901, Production Resources Department 900, of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Responsibilities

You will fabricate, modify, repair, and install wooden and composite components such as bulkheads, decking, foundations, forms, patterns, crates, cabinetry, and other structural or functional items.

You will work from blueprints, sketches, and specifications to determine layout and assembly requirements. Aligns, fits, and assembles components to achieve proper configuration, fit, and finish.

You will use hand tools, portable power tools, woodworking machines, and measuring instruments required to perform woodworking tasks.

Requirements

• Must be a US Citizen.
• Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
• Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
• New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
• Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
• This is a bargaining unit position.
• You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
• You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
• You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

• Ability to accurately interpret and work from blueprints, plans, sketches, manufacturer's and military specifications.
• Ability to lay out work and make templates for use by other trades as well as in woodcrafter trade.
• Ability to constructs items using acceptable woodworking trade methods and techniques.
• Ability to set up and adjust basic machinery associated with the woodcrafter trade such as bandsaw, ripsaw, cut--off saw, ship angling saw, jointer, drill press, and similar tools.
• Ability to apply knowledge and experience in woodworking.
