Women's Health Equity Fellowship (Visiting Instructor)

About the role

The Women’s Health Equity (WHE) Fellowship is a two-year, non-tenure-track OBGYN departmental fellowship designed to train physicians in health equity for women in low-resource settings. Fellows develop core competencies in clinical care, research, professionalism, leadership, global-health ethics, partnerships, and cultural humility.

In the first year, the fellow spends the majority of time at Tsehootsooi Medical Center in Fort Defiance, Arizona, serving the Navajo Nation, following a brief orientation in Salt Lake City. During this period, the fellow may optionally pursue a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation. The second year is primarily spent in Kigali, Rwanda, working with University of Utah partners at the University of Rwanda and CHUK. The fellow also returns to Utah for several months to receive mentorship, complete a research project, and function as a general OB/GYN attending, supervising medical students and residents on labor and delivery and the gynecology inpatient service.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical care in low-resource settings, including the Navajo Nation and Rwanda.
• Develop and complete a research project focused on clinical innovation and quality improvement.
• Supervise medical students and residents on labor and delivery and gynecology inpatient services during time in Salt Lake City.
• Engage in mentorship with site mentors in Arizona and Rwanda.
• Demonstrate leadership in health equity initiatives and cultural competency.

Requirements

• Completion of an accredited Obstetrics and Gynecology residency.
• Board eligibility or certification in general obstetrics and gynecology.
• Licensure to practice medicine in the applicant’s current home state.
• Capability to serve as a generalist OB/GYN attending physician (e.g., recent experience in obstetric and laparoscopic surgical care).
• Completion of the ABOG written board exam prior to fellowship start (exceptions considered under extenuating circumstances).

• Experience or strong interest in global health, rural health, or health equity.
• Commitment to professionalism, leadership, and cultural humility.

• CV/Resume (include all past experience with global and rural health).
• CREOG Score Report.
• Personal Statement (limit to 1.5 pages).
• Statement detailing applicant’s personal philosophy on health equity and rural health (limit to 1 page).
• Letters of Recommendation:
  • For graduating residents: one letter from Program Director and two from other faculty members.
  • For attending physicians: one letter from current supervising physician and two from colleagues who know the applicant well.

International medical graduates must be ECFMG Certified and ABOG eligible. Non-U.S. residents must also submit:

• Valid ECFMG certificate with clinical skills assessment certification.

Schedule

• Start date: July 2026.
• Two-year fellowship duration.
• First year: Primarily at Tsehootsooi Medical Center (Fort Defiance, AZ) with optional Master of Science in Clinical Investigation in Salt Lake City.
• Second year: Primarily in Kigali, Rwanda, with several months in Salt Lake City for mentorship and research completion.
