Winding Design Engineer- Power Transformers
About the role
We are seeking a skilled and forward-thinking Winding & Assembly Design Engineer to join our team at Siemens Energy. This role involves designing winding and winding assembly components for power transformers, including preparing detailed drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs). You'll play a key part in driving innovation and optimizing product performance, all while ensuring alignment with Siemens Energy’s design standards, quality benchmarks, cost targets, and project timelines.
Responsibilities
- Interpret electrical design outputs to create detailed manufacturing drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs) for winding and winding assemblies used in large Power, Auto, and Generator transformers (up to 500 MVA, 550 kV), including sub-assemblies and components.
- Utilize 2D and 3D CAD software to model transformer components and assemblies, supporting the development of precise engineering documentation and BOMs.
- Provide technical support throughout the winding assembly manufacturing process, including quality inspections, failure analysis, and tolerance concessions.
- Collaborate with suppliers and internal teams to resolve design-related queries, recommend alternative solutions, and ensure adherence to quality and performance standards.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering with 3+ years of experience in transformer electrical design or winding & assembly design. More experienced candidates may be considered for a higher level.
- Expertise in designing various winding types (helical, layer, disc, multi-start) for LV, HV, tertiary, and regulating systems in transformers above 100 MVA / 145 kV is required.
- Familiarity with copper conductor types, including paper-covered strips and CTC (with/without enamel or epoxy).
- Experience in winding assembly design and insulation components (e.g., spacers, barriers, oil guides, molded pressboard parts).
- Knowledge of specialized winding processes such as conductor bending, joint formation, enamel removal, block pressing/sizing, gluing, crimping, and brazing.
- Understanding of dielectric principles, short-circuit forces, and oil flow mechanisms within windings.
- Willingness to relocate to Charlotte, NC if not already based in the area.
