Wind Technician I or II (Traveling Technician)

About the role
This is a full-time, permanent traveling position as a Wind Technician I or II, maintaining all aspects of customer turbines (e.g., electrical, mechanical, hydraulic). The role involves 6 weeks on with 1 week off (unpaid) as part of the field service team, with significant room for advancement. This is both the entry level and initial training level for the series.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a high level of safety awareness
- Climb heights of 300 ft. and greater several times daily
- Diagnose and resolve faults on turbines related to mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems
- Perform troubleshooting to identify root causes and execute corrective actions or open service cases with equipment manufacturers
- Perform energy isolation in accordance with Lock Out / Tag Out Procedures
- Perform pad-mounted transformer switching following Hazardous Energy Controls Procedures
- Execute small or large corrective tasks on wind turbines
- Perform preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance, performance monitoring, and evaluation
- Maintain all aspects (e.g., electrical, mechanical, civil) of turbines in a safe, high-quality, and efficient manner
- Maintain EH&S documentation and complete necessary paperwork (work orders, timesheets, tool and PPE inventory) within Maximo
Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License
- Ability to pass a background check and drug test prior to start date
- Safe Working Weight Requirement: This position has a weight restriction of 265 pounds as an essential function to ensure safe use of weight-rated equipment
Qualifications
Wind Technician - Level I
- High School diploma or GED
- Ability to complete Level I job performance measures and training at Deriva Energy renewables academy within 1 year
Wind Technician - Level II
- High School diploma or GED
- External Candidates: 3+ years of related work experience; must pass required Turbine Technician I and Electrical Operator I JPMs within the probationary period
- Internal Candidates: 1+ year of technical experience with Deriva Energy as a Wind Technician; must have Turbine Technician-1 and Electrical Operator1 JPM completed
Skills
- Experience with Vestas V82 and V90 turbines
- Familiarity with multiple wind turbine supplier technologies
- High voltage and substation maintenance experience
- Proficiency with mechanical and electronic testing equipment (e.g., voltage testers, amp clamps, oscilloscopes, hand and power tools)
- Knowledge of heavy equipment for facility maintenance and crane/rigging requirements
- Competency with Maximo EZ Max mobile work and My Time management systems
- Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- CPR and AED Training Certification
- TSL tower climber and rescue & EEM training
- Forklift certification
Working Conditions
- Travel to projects as required
- Exposure to mechanical, electrical, and other hazards
- Exposure to noisy, dusty conditions, chemicals, or solvents
- Operation of equipment including forklifts and commercial motor vehicles
- Daily climbing and work on turbine towers up to 300 ft.
- Ability to lift 75 lbs individually
- Walking, climbing stairs, ladders, and/or scaffolds
- Working in all-weather outdoor conditions (extreme heat, cold, wind, rain, snow)
- Completion of OEM or third-party technical specialty training program
