About the Role
Provide friendly and cooperative service to internal and external customers at our retail locations, which operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with limited exceptions. Process customer orders efficiently, accurately, safely, and courteously at a two-aisle check stand, multi-station self-checkout (SCO) lane, or customer service desk as assigned. Generally works 6-8 hour shifts between 5:00 AM and 1:00 AM.
Responsibilities
- Welcome, engage, serve, and thank customers while maintaining a friendly and enthusiastic atmosphere.
- Operate check stand equipment (cash register, scanner, scale) to process customer orders using two aisles.
- Engage in suggestive selling and other sales techniques.
- Process monetary transactions, including cash, checks, gift certificates, traveler’s checks, food stamps, coupons, and refunds, while adhering to Cash Handling and Lane Accountability policies.
- Maintain knowledge of product locations, UPC codes, and proper pricing.
- Keep check stands clean, neat, properly stocked, and safe.
- Stock, price, and rotate merchandise.
- May be assigned to a multi-station self-checkout lane or customer service counter as needed.
- Follow all state and federal laws concerning the sale of restricted or regulated items (e.g., tobacco, alcohol).
- Adhere to USDA Food Stamp or WIC voucher procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
Additional Self-Checkout Attendant Responsibilities
- Move within the SCO area to expedite transactions, maintain an attentive presence, and keep the area clear of safety hazards.
- Initiate and engage with customers as they process transactions.
- Respond to SCO stations to review, address, and clear alerts or errors in customer transactions.
- Monitor multiple simultaneous transactions and verify payments in a fast-paced setting.
- Assist customers at self-checkout kiosks to ensure accuracy and limit shrinkage.
- Maintain awareness of the self-checkout area, anticipate customer needs, and observe transactions closely.
- Prioritize safety by addressing or reporting concerns per Company policy.
Requirements
- Ability to work varied shifts in a 24/7 operation, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Friendly, courteous, and tactful interactions with customers and co-workers.
- Effective communication (hearing and speech) for customer relations.
- Complete written forms and conduct visual inspections of merchandise.
- Lift and maneuver objects up to 20 lbs. frequently and up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
- Operate check stand equipment (cash registers, scanners, scales).
- Stand or sit for long periods, walk rapidly, bend, stoop, twist, and turn frequently.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Manual dexterity and good hand/eye coordination.
- Learn and memorize PLU codes, product locations, check stand procedures, and company policies.
- Ensure accuracy in scanning, verifying sales, and handling monetary transactions with basic math skills.
- Occasionally use blades for box cutting.
- Use household cleaners to maintain the work area.
- Perform primary duties efficiently and accurately in potentially high-stress situations.
Additional Requirements
- As required by state and local laws: food safety/handlers cards, tobacco and alcohol sales certification (e.g., TAM card).
- For minors: hours, machines, and equipment operated may differ.
