About the role
Tangled Bank Conservation is seeking 2 Wildlife Conservation Technicians based in Asheville, NC to support multiple concurrent, multi-state conservation initiatives throughout the southern and eastern United States.
Responsibilities
- Collect eDNA samples and aquatic macroinvertebrate samples using established protocols.
- Assess field sites to determine suitability for sampling. Identify and document appropriate replacement sites if necessary.
- Plan and execute an efficient sampling schedule to meet project timelines.
- Properly filter, store, and ship collected samples to Tangled Bank Conservation laboratory and other partners.
- Collect and record field data accurately and systematically.
- Deploy, maintain, and retrieve camera trap arrays following project protocols.
- Process aquatic macroinvertebrate samples in a laboratory setting, including specimen sorting and operation of automated imaging equipment.
- Collaborate closely with another field technician in teams of two, ensuring effective communication and cooperation.
- Maintain regular communication with project staff regarding progress and any field or laboratory issues that arise.
- Assist with additional field, laboratory, and conservation tasks as project needs evolve.
Requirements
- Must reside within commuting distance of Asheville, NC, or be willing to relocate prior to the start date.
- Reliable personal vehicle for extended field travel required. Mileage reimbursement will be provided for approved project-related travel.
- Vehicles with larger storage capacity and 4WD/AWD capabilities are preferred but not required.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage field work, daily logistics, and scheduling while maintaining communication with project staff.
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- Experience with field work and data collection, particularly in aquatic or terrestrial wildlife monitoring.
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain).
- Willingness to travel extensively, potentially for several weeks or more at a time, across multiple states in the project area, with occasional weekend work as needed.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing schedules and field conditions.
- Comfortable working in teams of two, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate closely with other field staff during extended field assignments.
- Basic understanding of GPS and mapping tools for site navigation and data collection.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to follow written protocols.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling or aquatic biodiversity monitoring.
- Experience with camera trapping, acoustic monitoring, or other wildlife survey methods.
- Experience processing biological samples or conducting laboratory-based research.
- Familiarity with species and ecosystems of the southeastern United States.
Position Details
- Temporary employee position for 6 months beginning in August or September 2026.
- All sampling gear will be provided by Tangled Bank Conservation.
- Employees will be responsible for providing their own vehicle for project-related travel. Mileage reimbursement will be provided for approved project travel, and lodging expenses associated with required out-of-town field assignments will be covered by Tangled Bank Conservation.
- Training, equipment preparation, and project planning will occur at Tangled Bank Conservation’s Asheville headquarters prior to field deployments.
- Following completion of the initial six-month appointment, this position may be extended depending on project availability, organizational needs, and performance.
Compensation
Compensation will be $2,500-$3,000 per month depending on experience. Mileage reimbursement will be provided for approved project-related travel using personal vehicles. Lodging expenses associated with required out-of-town project travel will be covered by Tangled Bank Conservation.
