About the role
Wildlife biologist position for Bear Island located in Unit 4C, focused on wetland habitat management, invasive species control, infrastructure maintenance, and public hunt programs.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and conduct the management of wetland habitat on Bear Island.
- Monitor and control invasive plant species as they are discovered.
- Maintain updated work plans and objectives for necessary maintenance and repairs on the waterfowl area infrastructure.
- Handle necessary paperwork, purchasing duties, report compilation, budget tracking, and management plan updates.
- Supervise and conduct public hunt programs and other public use programs on Bear Island.
- Maintain non-wetland related infrastructure and upland habitat on Bear Island.
- Conduct waterfowl banding both on-site and off-property.
- Collect other survey data as required.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in biology, chemistry, or a related technical field; or a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management, or a related technical area and two (2) years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to manage both freshwater and brackish water habitats for waterfowl usage.
- Experience conducting public hunts for the general public.
- Familiarity with dike maintenance, bulkhead installation, and trunk construction and installation.
- Experience in conducting rice trunk style management.
- Ability to identify wetland plants beneficial to waterfowl.
- Experience supervising staff, managing budgets, collecting data, and compiling monthly reports.
- Willingness to work with the general public, early mornings, late evenings, some weekends, and in inclement, buggy conditions.
