Wildlife Biologist

About the role

The position involves serving as a Wildlife Biologist within Wildlife Services, delivering, managing, and administering projects and programs with minimal supervision. The primary focus is on wildlife damage management operations in urban, suburban, and rural environments.

Responsibilities

• Select appropriate methods such as pesticides, firearms, explosives, repellents, traps to develop and deliver safe and effective damage management strategies.
• Coordinate wildlife damage management projects involving multiple stakeholders and cooperators.
• Interpret and apply policies, regulations, laws, and ordinances affecting wildlife management operations.
• Communicate safe and effective damage management techniques through outreach and other channels to the general public.
• Aid other Wildlife Services employees as needed and assist in training new personnel.
• Modify or adapt established damage or disease control techniques to fit local conditions and specific environmental, economic, or political considerations.
• Recommend areas for potential research or developmental studies to reduce risks of damage to resources or disease transmission to domestic animals and humans.
• Develop and deliver training for cooperators, stakeholders, partner agencies, and organizations.
• Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other federal, state, county, and city government agencies, tribes, corporations, educational or research institutions.
• Gather, compile, evaluate, and present data on damage or hazards caused by various wildlife species to cooperators, stakeholders, and colleagues through project or program reports.

Requirements

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the basic qualifications outlined, which include a combination of education and experience, or a relevant degree, with specialized experience in wildlife biology, zoology, and botany. Additionally, applicants must have experience in wildlife damage management, policy interpretation, and communication.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in biological science with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science.
• Master's degree in wildlife biology, wildlife ecology, or wildlife management or a closely related field, with 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education.
• Specialized experience in wildlife damage management, policy interpretation, and communication.
