WIC Health and Nutrition Educator

Job Duties

• Serves as a nutrition counselor and health educator.
• Facilitates patient-centered goal-setting for nutritional balance and healthy lifestyles for patients.
• Adheres to the mandates of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program duties in accordance with USDA Regulations and State and Local Agency Policies and Procedures.
• Determines medical/nutritional risks and prescribes supplemental foods as part of the WIC program.
• Performs nutrition assessments and determines nutritional risk factors in clients applying for WIC.
• Develops care plans and provides appropriate counseling and follow-up on nutrition during pregnancy, lactation, post-partum, and infancy/early childhood.
• Properly documents all services provided.
• Provides nutritional counseling both individually and in groups.
• Helps maintain a smooth patient flow through the WIC office.
• Promotes breastfeeding by educating WIC clients on the benefits and basics of breastfeeding and pump use.
• Provides breastfeeding education for staff and organizes breastfeeding support for clients.
• Affords assistance in scheduling and enrolling clients in the WIC program and completing duties for certification and food benefit issuance as needed.
• Designs informational materials and serves as a nutrition resource for WIC clients, health department staff, and the community.
• Provides nutrition services to OWCHC and DCHD clients, staff, and community residents.
• Plans and participates in community health education programs.
