About the role

This position involves operating a front-end loader to load trucks with granular fertilizer and performing various maintenance and housekeeping tasks as instructed. The role primarily supports facilities that unload barges of bulk and/or break bulk products, with duties varying based on daily operational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Fully participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre-shift meetings.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations (ISO where applicable), including wearing appropriate PPE.
  • Perform deckhand responsibilities, such as securing barges, reading drafts, opening/closing/removing/placing lids, and tying off barges.
  • Operate a skid loader inside barges during the final unloading stage.
  • Set up and operate conveyor systems, where applicable.
  • Ensure the correct product is directed to the correct storage area.
  • Perform clean-up of barges post-unloading by sweeping and/or shoveling.
  • Load railcars and trucks to specifications, where applicable.
  • Complete documentation accurately and legibly.
  • Operate various heavy equipment and perform preventive maintenance (PM), where applicable.
  • Assist in general housekeeping of the work area.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred: 1 year of experience working in an industrial environment with a dependable work record.
  • Basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
  • Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to complete documentation requirements.
  • Ability to follow directions and use logical thought processes to interpret instructions and troubleshoot problems.
  • Ability to work well both independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to use tools appropriate for assigned tasks.
  • Commitment to exceptional customer service, both internally and externally.

Physical Demands & Requirements

  • Constant/continuous ability to balance, bend, stoop, twist, crouch, crawl, kneel, and squat.
  • Frequent ability to climb stairs and ladders, working at significant heights.
  • Constant/continuous ability to concentrate on tasks without distraction.
  • Ability to distinguish grade, color, odor, and damage characteristics in grain samples (at some facilities).
  • Ability to distinguish differences in odor intensity or quality using the nose.
  • Ability to enter information into a computer.
  • Frequent ability to grasp and reach.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs. occasionally to continuously, depending on daily needs.
  • Ability to meet requirements for and utilize all applicable PPE.
  • Ability to meet requirements of PFT and fit testing, where applicable.
  • Ability to pass all required FRA and DOT testing for this position (where applicable).
  • Ability to perform work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to safely walk on barge surfaces and work around deep/swift water.
  • Constant/continuous ability to stand and walk.
  • Ability to understand and communicate verbally, in person, and over two-way radio (including recognizing emergency alarms).
  • Ability to understand and follow written instructions.
  • Ability to walk safely on top of railcars, open gates, operate vibrators, etc., where applicable.
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and/or alternate shifts as needed.
  • Ability to work in high-dust environments around grain and other bulk products (where applicable).
  • Ability to work outside in extreme weather conditions.
  • Acutely aware of surroundings with the ability to quickly adjust to signals or changes in the environment.
  • Uses near, far, and peripheral vision and depth perception for tasks; may need to identify grain problems.

Environmental Conditions

The role requires working both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequent use of personal protective equipment is required. Travel may be required (5%-20%), including off-site training and/or work at alternate locations.

Pay

The expected base pay range for this role is $18.00 - $25.00 per hour. Actual pay offered may vary depending on work location, job-related knowledge, skills, and relevant experience.
